Heh...I've seen bad cables drive people bat-**** crazy with strange and often intermittent behavior. It's funny how a $2 part can test one's sanity...lol

Maybe it's cacheing your files in to RAM? *shrugs* I can't think of any other reason for your system drive to be faster.

I'm not wondering why it's faster. I'm wondering why I'm getting extremely low results on my D: drive. Look at them. They're way below where they should be. Why? Why did I get normal results that one time? What's going on here? Y'know? The C: drive is getting NORMAL results. The D: drive is NOT.

Can you please bench with AS-SSD ,both drive and post here after that maybe we conclude something.Don't think if you in love with SM wink.gif we are.AS-SSD never failed to resolve problem ,MOSTLY.

It's the same difference in AS SSD though. Yes, different numbers, but same difference: D: is a lot worse. So yeah, I already checked AS SSD a long time ago. :/

 

The reason why I didn't do it just now is that I'm worried about benching them too often.

Hmm, a cable change fixed the issue, and then it returned, right? Maybe the SATA III port the D drive is connected to has a problem, causing a bad connection with the cable, or some dust or dirt is on one of the contacts in that SATA port. This is your P67 board PC, right? With just two Intel SATA III ports. Just saying that an older board might tend to show signs of wear.

There are specs about the number of insertion/removal cycles a SATA cable should withstand without damage or impaired function, rather low IMO, such as 30 - 50 IIRC. The same must apply to SATA ports on a mother board. IMO it is a miracle SATA data cables and ports work at all, tiny contact area, very little pressure between the contacts, the cable connectors move easily when inserted in the ports. All SATA data cables are cheaply made IMO, I have yet to see one that is really of high quality.

You could try the D drive on a SATA II port (cringe) and see if you get more consistent results.

The difference in benchmark results at different times after the PC boots is usually caused by Windows being "busy" when it starts from a cold boot. After 15 minutes, as you noticed, Windows has calmed down, it finished checking if something was done or not (maintenance tasks) and doing them if necessary. Windows Update could be checking for more endless updates, and any other programs, from FFox to Adobe Flash player have done the same. The Event Log has stopped logging as many useless events than it does upon a cold start, etc, etc. I often see on PC tech review sites, in the description of the test system, say that the PC was booted and left idle for at least 10 minutes, so it actually is in an idle state.

Your OS drive is servicing all of that stuff, while running a benchmark at the same time. The result, a lower score.

These new 840 EVOs are the first drives to ever be connected to these Intel SATA III ports, so I'd have to say that it's dust. Still, it makes me wonder how I got perfectly normal results after swapping cables, and then, without touching anything at all, I get the same low results 6 days later before installing the new cables, and the same low results after installing the new cables...

 

I may have to find a day where I can really get at those ports and blow some air in there. Right now, that would be a project.

lol Ok, I don't get it. I complain about it, run a benchmark (I don't know why I ran one right after posting my complaint directly above), and now I get great results on my D: drive:
