[TC] The Console Market Is In Crisis - Page 5

That article is filled with misrepresentation of numbers in addition to just plan made up numbers. The author seems to not have even done basic research into the topic since Irrational Games "winding down" had nothing to do with the sales of BioShock Infinite.

Im not surprised, There is no console war for a start and never has been since sega has gone from the market.

But one thing i notice, There is no stability in the market, say you really like a game that has just come out, Before you know it theres tons of DLC that is worthless because there is already another sequel to that game and it has all the DLC you just brought anyway.

Also there is no exclusives these days, and even the non exclusives were different on different consoles, Remember the SNES and the Mega Drive (Genesis) You would get the same game on a console (Alien 3 on the MD for example) And that would be completely different to the SNES version, We dont get things like that anymore.

Nobody should be making consoles these days that produce anything less than 1080p at 30-60 fps (depending on how busy the screen is at that point in time) for every game on the console. Next-gen consoles (ps5 era) should be designed for 2k at 60 fps. As long as current-gen consoles can't match the standard resolution and framerate of the average television screen, they're going to be in a declining market. MS and Sony are causing their own problems.

This statement hardly makes any sense. The current generation of consoles can produce games at 60 FPS and 1080p resolution. There's some already out now. If there's games that aren't, it's because the developers either haven't got as much out of them as others or they chose to prioritize other aspects and sacrifice either frame rate or resolution as a result.

I have a 360 and have never considered either next gen, as my PC walks all over them combined. wink.gif

Just some geography:

USA Population (2012): 314,000,000
Canada Population (2012): 35,000,000
Mexico Population (2012): 121,000,000

North America's Population (2013): approximately 529,000,000

NA = USA, Canada, Mexico, various Caribbean countries

Now for some marketing:

But, that information alone still isn't relevant enough. Consoles are typically purchased by households, not by multiple people. Also, there are many demographics that simply do NOT buy consoles. A more accurate representation would be how many TV households are there, and how many of those households actually buy consoles. As of 2013 there are 133 million TV households in the US, and it is estimated further that 69% of US households buy consoles. So that leaves the console market at 92 million in the USA, which is only about 29% of the total population. Similar data is not easily available for all of NA since the console market isn't really examined at such a macroeconomic scale.

Actually, most xb1 games are not 1080p (they run between 720 and 900), and I'm not sure the majority of PS4 games are 1080p. If they are, they're almost always at 30fps, locked. They can produce 1080p at 60 fps, with no AA and on a good day. I am saying that every game should be at that mark, not the occasional outlying product.

Makes perfect sense and my numbers aren't accurate, as seen below. I see game stats from Steam and know PC gaming isn't going anywhere anytime soon. tongue.gif

Thanks for the latest numbers. smile.gif Even with every household having 4 members, that's 132~ million. That would only account for 4.55%, if all 6 million PS4s were sold in NA. Only the future will tell. wink.gif

Just as a note: 7 billion of us worldwide and the percentages decrease even more drastically. Food for thought. thumb.gif

If every developer decided to sacrifice other aspects in favor of frame rate and resolution, then every game would be 1080p and 60 FPS. It's not the console that decides what frame rate and resolution the game runs at. Sony and Microsoft can't create a console that runs "every game" at 1080p and 60FPS because they only provide it to developers who then decide to prioritize what they want to.

Even if Sony/MS could somehow step into a time machine and retroactively change their system's specs so that the games currently out now could run at 60 FPS and 1080p resolution, there'd still be future developers who would push the system even further and sacrifice resolution/frame rate in order to do it.

Sony is trying to meet the 1080p/60 fps threshold, but it is struggling. 1080/30 fps is common, especially on cross-platform games. PS4 exclusives are not immune to this issue.
