Unable to Install OS to SSD

Thread Starter
Hey, so today I decided after a lot of hassle using Cygwin on my PC it would be easier just to move over to Linux. I burnt a live CD of linux mint and everything went well up until the install. I selected my SSD as the correct drive (using the option for the installer to automatically erase and partition it), then went on to pick my region. At this point the error " The creation of swap space in partition #3 of SCSI5(0,1,0)(sdc) failed" appeared and I exited the installation. I looked at the disc in gparted and it returned that the disk label was unrecognised. I tried to create a new partition table and while it seems to go through the process nothing changes and I am unable to create new partitions. I went through hdparm and tried to fix the issue by un-freezing the drive and performing a secure-erase, which didn't help. Afterwards I decided I'll just try installing Ubuntu and I'm getting a similar type of error.
Code:
(initramfs) stdin: I/O error
mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: No such device
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
I've used Ubuntu and Xubuntu on numerous machines before without this type of problem (usually minor things like wifi adapters not working) but never on an SSD so I don't know if it's related.

I'm not sure whether this belongs here or in an OS forum, but any and all help is appreciated.

edit: those aren't actually supposed to be comments btw

edit2: I've been trying to use fdisk to create a new partition table. I can add new partitions and hit p to print the new table, everything looks normal. I tell it to write with 'w' and it says the partition table has been altered, but reprinting the partition table reveals nothing has changed. Additionally, I used hdparm to turn read-only off.

I don't know linux, but a similar issue occurs with a windows install sometimes and the fix is to unplug all other storage drives until the OS is installed, then re-connect them. Have you tried this?
