Console killer for my brother - Suggestions?

Thread Starter
My brother will be turning 13 later this year and I am thinking of building a steam machine for him. He is an avid Xbox gamer and I am trying to convince him to move to the PC world. So the idea is to build a PC that will plug into the TV and replace his Xbox. I will set it up so that Steam boots in big picture mode as soon at the desktop loads, no need for steam OS. He will use a handheld keyboard/touch pad and a 360 controller.

The requirements are:
Must be priced the same as an Xbox One - $599 AUD
Must have equivalent performance to an Xbox One
Small form factor

This is the build I have so far. Please tell me what you think and if there is anything I could change without compromising performance.

*UPDATED*

$49 - Silverstone PS08B Micro ATX
$63 - ASRockFM2A75M-DGS-R2 A75/2 x DDR3/1 x PCI-E2.0 x 16/6 x SATA3/4x USB3.0/DVI/D-Sub/GBLAN/5.1 CH AUDIO
$79 - AMD A6-6400K Dual Core APU BLACK EDITION, Socket FM2, 3.9GHz, 4MB Cache, integrated graphic
$25 - Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler
$199 - MSI GF GTX750TI 2G DDR5 DVI Twin Frozer
$59 - G Skill 4G(2x2G) DDR3 1600Mhz PC12800 RL 9-9-9-24(CL9D-4GBRL)
$69 - Corsair CX-430v3 430W ATX Power Supply, 80 PLUS Bronze
$58 - Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM SATAIII 6GB/S 3.5
$20 - Samsung SATA Black Internal DVD/RW Drive (Optional if I can't find one laying around)
Total - $601

Please keep in mind all prices are AUD.

Thanks biggrin.gif

It sounds like an XB1 might be better if he's already avid on XBL.

That and if you're trying to blend AM3+ with FM2 (and only being a dual core) I'd probably suggest some more research before proceeding with this project.

Hey mate,

You can save a bit by getting a case that already has a PSU in it... if you are not looking at getting a higher end GPU (i.e. 770 onwards i think) a built in PSU should do the trick. Also, if he is going to be on steam, there isn't a need for a optical drive (unless you are looking to watch movies and stuff on it as well).

To put the cost down a bit more, you can also go for an AMD GPU would... i think a http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=25329 should do the trick. similar price but more performance according to reviews.

As for HDD, i'd actually suggest getting a 2TB 3.5 inch from officeworks or some for like $79 and break it open yourself... more storage for a similar price.

Cheers

I really don't recommend using a psu that comes with a case, they are made very cheaply and can take out other parts when they go bad (I have had this happen in the past). You are better off dropping the aftermarket cooler and using the stock one if you are not going to overclock.

Yeah I wanted to go with a quality PSU because he will game for 8 hours straight. I know the cx series isn't the best but budget is important too so we must compromise somewhere.

Optical drive is for movies. The video card that you suggested is actually $20 more than the one I suggested. I did look at the amd range but with the new 750 ti it seems this card is the cheapest to offer similar next gen performance.

Thanks man, completely skipped my mind that I should be looking for fm2 socket, haven't done a build with an APU yet blushsmiley.gif Although, I think I would rather go with this board as it has USB3

If you want to compromise somewhere, I suggest not to compromise the PSU, since the PSU is the heart of your system. Better to spend abit more with a quality PSU than regretting it later, or compromise other parts instead.
