[Kotaku] Surprisingly Real Talk From A Top Man At EA - Page 3

Personally speaking i didn't think i was going to get BF4, they brought back some features that i liked from BF2 and i hopped on. While i enjoy it for what it is (especially since i'm studying everyday it's a good escape) i can honestly say DICE/EA have done a poor job with this game and it's likely my last BF less i see something that doesn't resemble this model of gameplay. By this model i mean BF infused with COD twitch reflexes and 100% offhand standing accuracy on a large map with vehicles etc. etc. i could go on.

As to the topic of discussion would every PC gamer not buying battlefield actually keep it from doing well? Or just conclude that there would be no PC version from then on? Though maybe i'm misinterpreting for this particular game. Console players will drive sales in the end regardless of Boycott by so many fans. I'm not saying someone should or shouldn't get the game. I'm simply stating that i think likely even a great deal of PC players not buying this game wouldn't change EA's attitude and business practice. In an industry that generates record breaking numbers of sales on a reincarnation of the same game year in year out with a different shade of color, it is my feeling there is little that a handful of us can do.

I read the entire article looking for a mention about why they pushed out bf4 too early. It could have been a great game, given another 6-9 months of work. Too bad this guy just rambled about f2p. If you want decent f2p go valve, otherwise **** off.

really only accepted EA back into my life when I got BF4 free with my graphics card.

what has happened is I basically play around the bug I encounter. For example, the nosoundbug in TDM and SDM, I feel such anxiety joining a Dm server now knowing I wont have sound for the first 9 minutes ( enough time to ruin my experience ) I just stay away now.

BUT I WANT TO PLAY TDM. :[

Wow.

EA never ceases to surprise. I thought customers were allowed to complain when a product wasn't up to their standards; companies that make such products are supposed to listen, and even if they deem that the customer is wrong, they should keep it to themselves. If the customer base that is unhappy is a minority, it's not even worth the PR damage to talk about it, if it's a majority, then there is something wrong with the company. In either case, the mere fact that they internally think like this is wrong on so many levels it explains a lot.

There is so much disdain for consumers in those comments that I can't help but to look right past the gaming business straight into the business itself, which is all they seem to care about. He passes off both an analytical and cynical business sense and no passion for gaming.

Don't expect gamers to buy games when they know that is what the company thinks about them.

EA's problem is at a fundamental, philosophical level of how they see the gaming business, I don't think this will ever change without some major restructuring and new people coming in.

And they are making the exact same mistake Microsoft did with Windows 8:
Quote:
What Hilleman puts stock in instead is "game telemetry," which he feels is "extraordinarily truthful" and "the richest dataset on the planet" which means "[EA gets] better data from our players than anybody else."

Sure, many people may have an imperfect way to put in words how they feel about something, but that ultimately applies to everything, a company has to learn how to know how to interpret and dodge some of the obstacles in the way of correctly interpreting things. There is no excuse to not listen to what customers have to say, much less throw them all under the bus in terms of consideration.

Like I said before, you don't have a winning Formula 1 team if the engineers only ever talk to the machines (telemetry data) and don't talk to the drivers.

Riiiight, top guy at EA is completely in charge of making games right ? and doing QA on every game EA develops

the complaining started after BF3, which set a horrible precedent. The whole thing went down the drain, might as well bail and let EA sink.

I said no to BF4 and no to TitanFall. Whatever they come out with next, I really don't want that either.
Not because I don't like EA, it's because the games are half-assed efforts.

I think what he was trying to say is that the vast majority of people who "play games" are still casual, even if they participate regularly the number of people with a level of investment similar to what you see in other activities is relatively rare.

It's like saying "just because you can pluck a string doesn't mean you can play a guitar".

That's how the world goes though. Companies don't exist to satisfy you, they exist to make money out of what they think you might want. They don't care much about a group of people who complains and stops buying their games because you're just that "angry 0.01%" to them.
