A Sad Day Indeed..... :( - Page 10

I second the hot water and alcohol. Either way you need to either soak or having it flowing over so as to carry away the sugars like others have said. I wouldn't bake it though, that will just caramelize the sugars where they are now and not help at all. Likewise if you do the dishwasher, make sure not to have a heated dry cycle on but instead put the board in front of a fan to help evaporate the water away while keeping it moving.

EDIT: didn't see that page 2 button.......Hope it works for you!

How long should I let this 'marinade'?

Remember and move it about in the bath (or move the alcohol, back and forth over the board). As for how long...I'd say till it stops smelling like a sweet shop...

Before getting started with the current status I need to say thank you again to every single person that posted in this thread. Originally after this happened I was completely prepared to box it up and let it go to eBay for any price. I was defeated. Thanks to you I have been encouraged not to give up and try a few things to resurrect the big Alienware. At this point, even if the machine is truly gone, it's been fun talking through the theories and trying new ideas.

UPDATE:

Since the Alienware motherboard is absurdly long, I wasn't able to find a pan that was big enough to hold the whole thing. I don't feel this was a concern since the Red Bull which contacted the motherboard appeared (and smelled) to be concentrated toward one end. This did however cause the board to sit in the alcohol at a slight angle which could possibly be beneficial by giving the residue somewhere to go.

My process:

1. Submerge problem area in 91% alcohol
2. Swish board around in alcohol every few minutes
3. Every 15-30 minutes remove the board from the pan and allow to drip mostly dry
4. Apply compressed air (especially to the PCH/northbridge area) to remove more of the remaining alcohol
6. Repeat 1-5

In total I would say the board soaked for a couple hours. As a test, I also applied this process to the keyboard which, as you can imagine, got the brunt of the Red Bull assault. I only let this soak for 30 minutes in total before I left it out to try. The result this morning was extremely encouraging as the keys now seem to travel much more normally. My rough guess is the keyboard is 95% back in action.

Woot! thumb.gif

My only concern about alcohol-ing the keyboard is that depending on what you use you can craze the plastic. So just watch out for that.

I am remaining cautiously optimistic. I did notice this morning that the motherboard no longer smelled of Red Bull so there is a good chance the alcohol dissolved it.

Just to be safe I'd probably leave it a day somewhere dry to make sure all moisture is gone before giving it power.

A keyboard can be had for cheap. I can say I would have soaked one side then the other. There is no way in knowing where it could be on the board.
However let it sit n dry. Power on no luck repeat but maybe leave it a good day and find summet long like a disp roasting tin the foil ones. If not long enough join two together with tape
