Hello OCN

Hello OCN

As you might have guessed by my nick my name is James and I live in Northern Indiana, USA. I have been a computing / gaming enthusiast since I was about 6 yrs old (now in mid-30's). I have 4 kids of my own now and I like to stay in touch with technology and the latest trends / memes on the internet so I can understand what they are talking about smile.gif My first computer was a Tandy 1000 that I used to play games. My parents eventually sold that and I didn't have another computer until I was about 12 and that was an IBM PS1 486 SX25 running Win 3.11. In between that time I got addicted to console games like Atari 2600 and eventually the original Nintendo. After we got our IBM PC I started programming in BASIC and hacking some of the games that I played on there to do certain things like make the fireball hit for crazy amounts of damage in Wizardry 7. Eventually this morphed into actually hacking the hardware to make it faster and do what I wanted. I spent lots of time on BBSes and eventually the internet when it came around.

I built my own PC when I was 15 using funds I had saved from working for a summer. It was a P2 300 (think slot 1, when intel strayed away from ZIF for a while). Eventually added a 3d accelerator (3dfx voodoo 2 8MB monster) and I was hooked. This was my first foray into enthusiast level computing. It was my passion and I stuck with it. I hung out on support forums to help others that had problems with their computers and this turned into a career of sorts. I quit my grocery store job and got a job as a phone tech at none other than America Online (AOL). This was during the time that they were transitioning from pay per hour service to unlimited and there were massive problems. I still remember **** about modem connection strings that I should have no business remembering at my age. Little did I know this would turn into a foundation for a great career in Information Technology. Fifteen years later I'm still in IT and still as excited about technology as I was back then, except with a slightly different focus. I still play games (MMOs and others with my kids), and I still enjoy building PCs (haven't bought an off-the-shelf PC in my life). At any rate, sorry for the wall of text!
