Hey there,

Hey guys I am doing looking at doing a HTPC build, As for grphics cards I am looking at a few i just want some input on what video card i should go with. I am new to HTPC builds but have built many Computers before just not with this small of a form factor. The card I am looking at is EVGA GeForce GT 610 2GB DDR3. Would that card work for doing a HTPC build.

If you are never going to game and only play media than anything more than a GT 640 is overkill.

So yes that 610 you posted is fine.

Hey there,

So i will not be gaming this build is just for Media only. This is what I am thinking of going with in terms of Components for the build:

1. TOSHIBA 2TB 7200 RPM (storage drive)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149407

2. Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB (OS and programs)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820721107

3. Intel Core i3-4330 Haswell 3.5GHz
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116945

4. GIGABYTE GA-B85M-HD3 LGA 1150
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128608

5. GeForce GT 610 1GB DDR3 HDCP Ready
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500299

6. APEVIA Black / Blue ATX Media Center / HTPC Case
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144232

7. Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239310

8. LG Black Blu-ray Drive
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136268

I have a copy of Windows 7 64-Bit at home and i will be installing that on this build. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Save yourself some money and delete the GPU; it's simply not needed for HTPC applications. I've built several HTPCs with Intel i3 CPUs and run off the integrated HD graphics. HD comes in just fine.thumb.gif

this.

since you are using a current gen haswel cpu the HD4600 on die gpu will be plenty. Buy more storage. htpc cannot have too much storage.

Are you using a surround sound system ? that motherboard does not offer any type of TOSlink or mulit channel sound output.

You could easily find an "H87" board for the same price as that B board which would give you more features, and better (nominal) performance. With an H board you may as well get 1600 RAM for a few dollars more. You really don't need a video card in an HTPC unless you want to run MadVR on max settings. The onboard Intel HD graphics do a great job of rendering video, I have 2 machines at home using onboard graphics and I can run 1080p + 3D all day long. Everything else looks good, happy building.

the question is, will the onboard video play blueray movies?

You could save even more money by going AMD APU (SocketFM2). An i3 is overkill for an HTPC. Use the saved $$$ for bigger HDD.
