Laptop for May

Thread Starter
I am looking for a laptop for my wife that she will be using for Law School come May.
I don't really have a budget yet but under 1K would be ideal. I'll adjust pricing if I can be convinced.

Law school laptop for my wife.
She is 5'1" so a 17" laptop probably is not recommended. 15" +/- might be a tad large unless its an ultra.

I would love to NOT have Win 8 if at all possible.
SSD is a must (128g is probably fine, but I can go higher).
Intel would be my choice on CPU.
Good screen would be nice, its like murder looking at my HP that views in 1366 x 768. Wouldn't mind going with a nice 1080p screen.
Does not need anything fancy in the GPU department, that is what my desktop is for.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your looking at an ultrabook?

Any preference on form factor? Notebook / Ultrabook

I really think the ultrabook might be the way to go. I want having to lug a laptop around be as minimal as possible. The last laptop we bought was in a pinch but served its purpose.

Sadly the whole school is geared to use Apple, but she isn't having any of that unless its 100% necessary. (basically apple provided the school with incentives to use them). Working for large corporations the only area that uses apple are our video team and graphics team.

For latops I have no loyalty. Ive owned a gateway with an intel and loved it. Got me through undergrad a few years ago. Then I got a monster (size, not performance) of an HP and it still runs quite well.
Reliable would be my biggest concern. What makes it tough to online shop is no matter what, she will need to test drive it somewhere to see if the feel is right. (test drive at store, buy online??)

OK, under that premise what are some shops your willing to drive to?

Unfortunately nearly every single laptop/notebook/ultrabook etc... out there has Windows 8 on it. The only way to avoid this is to have Windows 8 Pro with downgrade rights to Windows 7 or buy a Mac. Most portables have UEFI supported bios and Secure Boot so you may have to configure the bios to load Windows 7 on it. One of my relatives wanted me to install Windows XP on their Dell Windows 8 laptop but it just wasn't possible since there are no supported drivers for XP. And any laptop that has GPT will not work on Windows XP, I tried to boot XP on a UEFI Secure Boot laptop and it will just error out and will not load. So I ended up installing Windows 7 x64 instead, note that GPT drives will not boot from anything other than 64-Bit OS from Vista, 7, Server 2K8, and 8.

Best thing is to probably get an ultrabook since she's a shorty. You should probably ask her first before you decide to purchase the laptop. Some women are really picky about aesthetics. Yeah, test drive at like BestBuy, Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Fry's Electronics, Micro Center, Tiger Direct, etc.. and then go find it online.
