Cheers mate.

Is it 'almost confirmed' that Wellsburg will support only DDR4 and it's coming this year?
Shouldn't we be seeing memory MNCs showing off their new DDR4 modules? like in CeBIT?

So is this replacing the X79 chipset?

Yes, and thank The Lord for that. X79 was only half-built on Inauguration Day.

Didn't we already establish that HWE was going to be one hexcore and two octocores already about two three months back? Right here or in the news section?

Very certain I saw that and was pleased, since much better news than the $1000 suffix-X being the only 8-core.

I think pricing will follow Intel's tried and true price points as always (plus/minus $50).

6-core K $350
8-core K $580
8-core X $1000

Except the introductory/early adopter (first three weeks) cost will be higher as always.

You're kidding right? In the consumer market nothing even comes close to the performance of the X79 platform till this day.

Unlikely, but you never know. Good point about sub-$1000 octacore chips. There is no reason to get a #960X over a #930k in almost every situation, though being able to squeeze an extra $400 out of those who can afford the platform wouldn't be that bad an idea business-wise. All about profit margins.

Do you have a problem with my desire for a 5GB/s SSD array? tongue.gif Sucks that the fastest supported RAM isn't even as good as the fastest DDR3.

>Not enough PCI-E lanes /10

What happened to Intel promising more lanes on future chipsets?

Been wanting to move to a LGA 2011 board and Hexacore. I guess not anytime soon

Not really, the way I look at it is much like this:

X79 is much Like a friends Yugo, bit of a dogs breakfast on the outside, but pop open the bonnet you'll find a Chevy small block V8 there.

It's a bit cobbled together, the technologies used in it is hit and miss compared to comparable chipsets at the time that was better implemented, but thanks to the extra lanes and hex-core chips blasted past on raw power alone.

I almost wanna jump to X79 + 4930K or wait Haswell-E. but I decided this is a waste of money. The quad core i5 are adequate for Gaming right now. It would have been much better to buy a quad i5 now and save the extra money, upgrade the entire platform again in 3-5years time.

You're right - I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade my girlfriends 2700k + 7970 rig but seeing it ease through BF4 MP it's hard to justify.

I think people forget mainstream socket i7's still have 8 threads...

With the worlds push for lower power consumption chips I think my poor SB-E system wont be retired for a really long time. Even with DDR4 coming out, the gains from my 3960x with ram running at 2400 CL9-10-10-28 T1 I doubt there will be any noticeable difference outside of a benchmark that spits out a number.

I also don't need 10 USB ports....

Sandy to Haswell is a sidegrade at best since Sandy overclocks like a beast. And while you are right, consumer i7s have 8 threads, these things have up to 12 and soon 16 in addition to far better chipsets in general.
