[wccftech] Intel Haswell-E X99 Chipset “Wellsburg” Details Leaked - Page 5

What I could never understand was the massive amount of different sockets with only tiny changes in the processors functions. Sounds like milking to me. Once Intel releases a unified socket I'll consider.

X99 sounds pretty lousy from this news. Apparently the chipset will only support 4 DIMMs, which is a huge step backwards from X79. That is, unless the standard for DDR4 will be 16 GB DIMMs for normal capacity.

This chipset pretty much has all the latest bells and whistles except sata express. Might consider this if intel offers a $600 8 core K variant.

I don't think SATA Express is even out yet. M.2 SSDs are just barely hitting the market.

Won't happen. They have their consumer chips with iGPUs and somewhat gimped instruction sets, and they have their enterprise chips with a crap-ton of cores. For enthusiasts they have the i7 Extreme series that is somewhere in-between. AMD can do a unified socket since their enterprise market is almost nonexistent. (Please no flame war please no flame war...)

Though im sure there are more features on X79 - X99 compared to Z68, Z77 & Z87. Its a hard sell to justify moving to a native 8 core with 16 threads from a quad with 8 threads for current games/remedial tasks.

I still don't even know if I need this 3960x as no game has utilised its threads, meaning why do I need 16?

Its ironic im pushing my cynicism onto a cynical unicorn, hahah tongue.gif

You're right. For gaming, none of these new processors are necessary. Not until games start utilizing multiple cores/threads.

I think thats an accurate assumption as to why people could justify upgrading from a hex to octocore.

Epeen and benchmarking!

Or if you need 10 sata ports!

The chipset has nothing to do with RAM support. Edit; not sure why it'd be limited to just 4 DIMMs per CPU but it may be made up for in high-capacity DIMMs. The new platform should be pretty good from the look of it, leaked specs have barely changed in the past year and a half so it should be safe to assume they won't change when they show up in retail.

yeah, I'm hoping they don't renege on the 10xSATA6 ports like they did with X79, and I'm also hoping the performance is at least no worse than SATA controllers on their mainstream chipsets

Ivy-E has solder, these should have it too. Whether or not it will make a difference in the average overclock remains to be seen. Ivy-E hasn't been much better. I suppose thats why many of us are hoping for a reasonably priced 8core part

I think he's referring to the fact that X79 launched under-delivering on what was hinted at, not only was X79 rumored at one point to carry up to 10xSATA6 ports (much like we're seeing again with X99, knock on wood...) but it was eventually downgraded to the 6 port, 2xSATA6 + 4xSATA3 config that was on all the Sandy chipsets, oh and its SATA performance was actually worse than those mainstream chipsets and lacked features like the SRT SSD caching that intel introduced with Z68. Oh yeah, and no on-chip USB3 support either...had to go with 3rd party unlike with Z77.

it really did end up feeling like a half-effort chipset that intel just went through the paces with to give us SB-E, and yet also still ended up costing significantly more for same or worse features as the mainstream counterpart, the only thing making up for it was the CPU and memory, and then only if you put in a ton of memory (at least 4 sticks) and a 6 core CPU.

idk man, my PC does a ton of multitasking and i feel more threads are way better.
for instance, i have securtiy cams, movie server/transcoding and usually gaming all going at the same time...threads = easier for everything.
there are plenty of people like me, and those that do way more than i do.
i also encode a lot of BR rips and anything that can shorten that time makes me really happy.
