I heard that you can flash 4870x2 to a 7990 (true story).

Really? I'm off to buy four or five, flash them to 7990's then massive quad uber XFire for mining (in Skyrim).

I did, and that's where it starts to get confusing. The GTX 770 uses GK104-425, the 760 GK104-225, the 680 GK104-400, the 690 GK104-355, and the 670 GK104-335. Asus could be using different dies on different mars boards, like GK104-400 dies, but bios locked to GK104-225. If this is anything like the 290->290x dies, then there can be some variance on what gpus vendors are soldering to the pcb. So, although one picture can say mars is using GK104-225, another card could be using GK104-425 dies. The confusing part is the differences between all of the gpus. The 760 has one less SMX unit than the 670, which has one less than the 770/680, and the 690 is basically a lower clocked 680 with a lower tdp and voltage, hence the GK104-355 vs 400. The newer 7x0 series have a higher base vram speed (6ghz vs 7ghz), with a minor increase in core clocks. They also have a higher volt limit and tdp. All of those aspects can be changed by a bios flash. Seeing as people have successfully flashed their 680s to 770s, that further opens up the possibility to this, but I'm still skeptical, very skeptical.

If NV handles their fabrication similarly to AMD, then if a die is named GK104-225, it's GK104-225, no matter how you slice it. You won't be able to unlock any cores or anything like that because the cores were already cut, and given the name GK104-225, which means it has been officially designated as a GTX 760 core. The same goes for all of the other cores NV fabricates. Saying you can get a GK104-355 out of a GK104-225 is nonsense. This rumor can only be true if some MARS 760 cards are using GK104-425 gpus. I say 425 because it can be all of the other gpus. It's basically the highest GK104 version out there. It can be a 760, 680, 670, and a 690 gpu, and all that's needed is a bios flash to unlock the cores, change the SSID/VID, clockspeeds, voltages, memory timings, and fan speeds to whatever bios version is designated to (and yes, a bios flash can do that).

Given the strictness of NV's Green Light program, and how stringent Asus is with matching dies with gpu versions (ie 760 using only GK104-225 dies, nothing higher or better), I call BS. There isn't any proof that this will actually work, and that Asus is throwing in GK104-425 chips in their mars cards. The source for this is probably someone speculating that it can be unlocked to a 690 because the pcb basically looks the same, which has nothing to do with the gpu die's unlock capabilities. The only way this card can turn into a 690 is by it having 770, 680 or 690 gpus inside it, but flashed to 760. Even then, I'm kind of skeptical if I can count in 680 and 690 gpus because of the implications that come from the Green Light program (GPUs must 100% comply with NV's guidelines for selling GeForce products), and that those gpus were made to operate under a lower voltage, clockspeed, and TDP. So really, it would have to have 770 GPU dies inside for it to work, and that's if and only if vendors are allowed to exceed the guidelines and requirements for their gpus due to NV Green Light. If they can't exceed (100%->110%, over spec.), and can only match (100%->100%, same spec.), then this is completely BS.

Maybe forst we would need to know if the 760gtx unlocks to 770gtx or 680gtx

I see the point reg the dies but it could be a binning process. They had faulty higher spec cores that have been reduced for many number of reasons or not enough cores so locked some like amd and the phenoms

I wonder if we could just PM one of the ASUS reps here like Raja and ask which die version is used on the Mars 760? That seems like the cheapest and easiest colution to seeing if this even has a small chance of being true.

Or just look at the photo of the card in the OP. Both dies are clearly marked GK104-225-A2 smile.gif
