Just tried windows 8 for the first time..............lets just say i am extremely pissed and unhappy(help with new OS thread) - Page 12

windows 8 is not worth the problems. i had multiple issues with it that I never had with windows 7. Then i blue screened with windows 8.1 and couldnt recover the install, so back to windows 7, no more problems.

So what exactly is broke, what about keeps the OS from performing it's functions? Your on an enthusiast web site, that means the people here like to push the boundaries. see what the tech offers. When we see something new we do not whine about it being broken we find out what changed and figure out how to make it do what we want it to do.

The Metro OS works just fine for keyboard and mouse, the MYTH that it does not is pure BS made up by people that never bothered to use it. Windows 8 does have two changes that caught people off guard. A lot of the functionality is now in right clicks and specific screen locations. The other is the fact that the interface between Metro and desktop apps is a bit kludgy, but neither of these make the OS unusable. In fact Windows 8 from a pure OS perspective is a pretty nice improvement over Windows 7 in terms of performance and resource usage.

Now for the record I DO NOT work for MS. However I find it sad when the tech enthusiast community has so many cry babies in it. Serious this is supposed to be the community that spends $50 for new coolers to make their CPU run outside the way it does out of the box. Builds water cooling units for the same reason. Will spend all sorts of time and money to make their computer work differently than the parts where designed to work and then will ***** because to make the OS give them back a Start Menu they are attached to they must expend a little effort.

To put this in a bit of perspective: I never hated Vista. I had it on a laptop I used for years for school and while I found it a bit clunky, I never got too exasperated. When I first tried windows 8 I, like the OP, just got angry. I could not figure out how to open control panel, device manager, task managers CPU monitor, anything. I couldn't even figure out how to get to the desktop. (I only learned that when my friend managed to figure it out after about 20 minutes of us pouring over her moms new laptop months later) After 10 minutes I gave up because I felt like an idiot. I can see how it would be good for some casuals and tablet users who don't care about that stuff but an OS should never make we want to throw my expensive electronics in a lake.

Oh and I do actually have a W8 phone and I like it. Its simple to use and not frustrating in that environment because I don't have to search for a start screen or anything giving more credance to my assertion that W8 metro is best suited for casuals in phones and tablets. On the other hand I gave it to my girlfriend to play with and she expressed a desire to throw it in a lake because she could figure stuff out in it.

That's because Microsoft really doesn't want the average person to use the desktop.  Microsoft would much rather users switch from the "legacy" Windows platform to the App platform.  Want to browse the web?  Sure, we've got an App for that.  Email?  Just click the Email App.  I just think that on non-touch screen devices, the desktop was so much more intuitive without all the confusing and hidden gestures that are in the App platform.

here is my latest win8.1 fail. can someone advise on how to turn this beyond stupid feature off.

when I drag a window "beyond" the viewable desktop. cause i am searching for an icon behind the open window and did not want to minimize. now the window is half outside of the viewable area. stupid win8.1 automatically reposition the window back onto the viewable desktop.

like I am an idiot and did not realize I "purposely" drag it outside the viewable area. this is as dumb as it gets. mad.gif

also. currently running surround and this same stupid feature will not allow me to have the same windows spread across two screens.

start8

/thread

the ONLY time I have EVER gone into the retarded windows app store was to get the 8.1 update

once you have start8, other than aero, you will not be able to tell it isn't 7 other than the performance upgrades

That sounds like Aero Snap.  To turn it off, press [Win]+[ U ], click "Make the mouse easier to use", tick "Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen", and click [OK].  The same feature is also in Windows 7, although I'm not sure if its behavior has been changed in Windows 8.  While I really like Aero Snap most of the time, it would be really nice if holding down some key (like [Ctrl]) would bypass it, because it is annoying when it won't let me put a window exactly where I want it. smile.gif

I am a big time keyboard shortcut fan. Next time use Win Key + D (think D as in "Desktop") and that will take you to the desktop quickly. In Windows 7, you can use that same keyboard shortcut or use the clear bar on the right right side of your taskbar just next to the time. Clicking on that will also take you quickly to the desktop.

I agree though...for the average joe user out there who is not knowledgeable on using keyboard shortcuts, getting to the desktop in Win 8.0 can be a bit of a challenge. Win 8.1 fixes that however because the OS boots straight up to the desktop from what I understand.

windows 8.1 is not even windows. at all. the whole point to windows is to have... windows on your screen. i can open many different things and rearrange them or switch between then very easily and with multiple screens i can see many different things at teh same time. very easy to switch back and forth between things. with apps, thats not even realistic. they are basically worthless with the exception for one printer app. that is the ONLY app i've ever used on my win 8.1. other than that startisback has been my friend.

Why do you think they call it windows? Because you get to waste time playing around with windows and dragging them all over the place to get to where you want to go biggrin.gif

Seriously, it's 2014 and the "other two" OSs have much more advanced window/desktop management. It's just downright shameful.

Unfortunately (to my knowledge), if you have 10 windows open and you do Meta + D, you get your desktop, but once you double-click that shortcut and get the new window, you now get to click each one of those 10 icons in your taskbar to get them back up.

If there's a way to move your windows aside, get to that icon on your desktop, open it up, and move everything back to where it's supposed to be, please do share!
