Just tried windows 8 for the first time..............lets just say i am extremely pissed and unhappy(help with new OS thread) - Page 16

Try to use Metro at 2560x1600. Yes its usable. But I'm sorry, I got this monitor for DESKTOP use, not tablet use. Yes, its the same thing as the start menu.....but its not. And the actual Metro "apps" are a joke.

Next time I format, I'm going Linux. Yes I know about Classic Shell. Been using 8.1 with Classic Shell for months now. I'm still not happy with it.

My general take on this, quoting myself from another forum topic:

Windows 8 is a solid OS but you wouldn't get that impression from reading all the negative hyperbole about it. When I installed it I was incredibly frustrated with so many things but after quite a while of researching, installing tools, and editing the registry I'm okay with it now.

I know if I was given a more positive desktop experience out of the box it would have changed my impression of the OS as a whole, but as it was I was left with several negative experiences first. This is what affects my opinion of Windows 8, even if I can objectively see it's solid beneath it all.

Your quote actually goes with what I said just above you. I'd be fine with Windows 8 / 8.1 if MS would just include the ability to bypass Metro and "apps" entirely. But they don't. I have to rely on third party tools, which aren't as effective, as I still end up having to use "apps" and "Metro" every once in a while, even if its by accident.

If they'd have just given us the OPTION to use a classic desktop interface, and not force Metro and "apps" on us, I'd be fine with 8 / 8.1.

Why would they give you the option to disable metro when they get a cut of all the app store sales?
This kind of conversation is still going on after all these months?

I guess I just don't get it, I must be like the guy that doesn't care what car he drives as long as it goes from A to B. I never see metro, ever. Unless I want to. I don't care about it, it doesn't bother me, it isn't in my way. The only thing I care about is my games run faster and more smoothly and it boots up fast. I tried going back to Win7 for a while and ended up having a lot more problems, audio driver conflicts and broken/corrupt registry problems that I just re-installed 8.1 again and am perfectly happy with it.

I'm sure someone will bring up productivity, but I used 8 at work for a while as well and had zero issue with it, the computer illiterates I worked with did just fine as well.

Indeed. My first experience with Windows 8 was on a 5400x1920 Eyefinity array. Even if first thing I did was getting Start8 and slapping Metro into it's box as hard as I could it was still not quite desktop OS. It was kinda like playing console port on PC. It kinda works but you can tell that the design decision have been made keeping a different control method in mind. I endured it for 6 months (had a busy period at work and could not spare a day for fresh install and customization) until I had an opportunity to spare couple days for re-installing windows 7 and get everything I need set up and customized properly again. Some nice things in Win 8 kernel, Win + X shortcut was nice, etc, but at the end of a day it's not a desktop OS in my opinion bcos of retarded UI decisions.

But you see, most windows people who have never used another OS would say that having to use 3rd party tools to mask your OS means its "customizable."

This is honestly the way of the future, If your still stuck in the past and don't want to learn how to use it then your in luck windows xp, and windows 7 are both still easily found for sale. Its been confirmed by a microsoft employee i know personally metro is here to stay, and is in the next version of windows as well.
