It boots faster and loads programs into memory a little faster, but a better way to rectify those issues is just to use an SSD as the system drive. You'll get "smooth as silk" on any OS if you just do that.

Seriously, if someone has Win 7 and is still booting from an HDD, they're better off upgrading to an SSD than they ever would be spending the same amount of money to upgrade to Windows 8.

I agree. In my case I would only buy an ssd when they drop prices a bit (as in my country they are uber expensive). On the other hand I didn't pay a single dollar to upgrade to W8 so I really cannot say if I would be angry in spending it...

in regards to modding/improving win8.1

start8 is a nice mod.

how about a mod which bring back aero. not necessary aero itself, but a better window frame so that each window is easily distinguish.

with win7, one could open up 10+ tabs and was able to quickly tell one window from another at a quick glance. cannot say the same for win8.1. win8.1's windows are so dull they tend to blend in together which require a second look. (if this is not harder then keep drinking the kool aid).

1. Place cursor on the lower left corner and use right click.
2. Use Desktop mode.
3. Profit?

Honestly, I was a bit lost for a while after purchasing the Surface RT but soon I found 8.1 to be a lot snappier and better to use than 7. Made me install 8.1 on my desktop, too.
Just don't bash it straight away, give it a chance thumb.gif

I admittedly hated Windows 8 when I would play with it in the store. But, I put it on this new build I just did because I wanted the latest and optimizations yadda yadda. After a day or two of using it I am completely used to it. Especially since I have 8.1 and just set it to boot straight to desktop. Windows 8 + SSD = holy crap fast.

Edit: DzillaXx beat me too it!

...or just tap the power button.

I wish people would stop it with the people are lazy, or too stupid, or too stubborn, or whatever to learn to like Win8. You could say the same thing about Linux. With an exception of already purchased software and an ever gradually declining exception of gaming...there really isn't a reason to not use Linux over windows. So why aren't the millions of users that do nothing on their PC but email and Tweet all flocking to linux? The answer is they don't want to learn a new OS or else they don't like it.

Plus...the poor reception of Win8 is so wide spread that I don't think any one can deny that it was just bad idea. Sure, you and I use it just fine, but I have the feeling you and I take change as more of a challenge than a chore. There a lot of things I don't like, but I can say the same about Win7 and they aren't going to stop me from using it.

Not the same thing. For any touch-enabled device, Windows 8 is a great OS. I use the Metro style constantly, every day, on my Nokia Lumia. Works great, too. But it isn't helpful at all on a standard desktop machine.

They are. What do you think Android is? 99.9 percent of them may not know they're using Linux, but they are.
