They are. What do you think Android is? 99.9 percent of them may not know they're using Linux, but they are.

Heh, yeah I laugh about it all the time, but when you put the new OS on a new device...it is fine. Even the few users of Windows Phones don't really bellyache all that much.

Take the android OS and put it on a PC where the users have gotten used to things being a certain way and it doesn't go over very well.

This. I barely ever see the start screen.

A fair run on it is needed to truly appreciate it. By fair run, I mean regular use. 1-2 days isn't a fair run. Try maybe a month.

If Windows 8 is "hard" for you, I'd hate to see you try...pretty much any other software. Ever.

Right click on start icon, click shutdown. Boom.

Its called getting with the times and actually trying to learn it. Its very simple once you do. It does not hold your hand like 7. Its also faster and more secure. If you must have a start button. Start8 is the best out of them all.

Am i alone on the hate for this OS?

anyways my questions are:

1) can you get free downgrade from microsoft?

2)can i make windows 8 look like windows 7 and remove all the crap on screen?

i heard a lot of bad stuff on new OS but jesus i never thought i would get this pissed off over a OS lol.

I'll put another vote against Windows 8, and 8.1.

I did take the time to learn to use it, and not willingly, I had to. I'm the go-to computer guy when people experience problems, and make a few bucks on the side for it. When this OS began appearing, my clients hated it also- across the board.

Not only did it make everything I do to tune up these machines much, MUCH harder, but there are also elements to this OS that make it not very friendly to someone doing what I do. For example: upgrading a client's computer from 8 to 8.1 requires a windows live login and password. They won't let you skip this. Sure, I could use my own, but will this flag me as not owning their OS? Will I be able to remove my account from every application that wants to load it later? I can remove the account later (since it is then required for every restart until you do so!) but I'm supposed to have the clients come to me to type in their password and leave upon installing this update? Horrible. I'm sure I'll figure out a good way around this mess soon, but the changes are horrible and I've found no technical layman to argue that. Without a touchscreen...this OS just doesn't make sense to anyone.

Here's the thing with change- Windows OS has changed with every release, sure. I grew up on DOS, so when Windows came about I started using it from day one. I've seen all the changes, and for the most part, they have been fine. There were a few differences here and there, and small learning curves, but at least it still had a start button! This OS completely rocked the boat, and I mean completely, to how laymen use their computers and access everyday things. It's like removing the steering wheel from a car to them, and most people now don't know how to drive correctly. As a result, many of the machines running Win8 have come to me for a fresh install of Windows 7, and were overjoyed afterwards.

I understand why M$ did this move, and I'm not opposed to having all our devices working together. But this was implemented horribly. You shouldn't have to install any third party programs or any specific "customizations" to make a laymen be able to use their computer without frustration. Windows 7 was intuitive out of the box, and coming from Windows XP or Vista, people knew how to use it within 10 minutes. It's hard to argue that this is the case with Windows 8, sorry.

Too much integration of accounts and logins just to use the computer, OS designed around touchscreen technology going on peripherals like mouse and keyboards, too much confusion on what you can and cannot install, whether it's an app, a program, "how do I change what shows on this big screen of apps!" ; "My computer won't use my purchased software anymore!" ; "I can't figure out if this is opened or closed!" "How do I find (X)" and the list goes on with what I am hearing constantly. If it were only me, and I really wanted to make this OS work for me...maybe my opinion would differ slightly.

From my standpoint though...absolutely horrible. I'd rather teach people linux than this.

tbh i was very against windows 8 first, like many others but after using it for 1 week i got used to uit and it's not that bad. As other said, it's different but not bad but i'm also that kind of man who likes to have the latest software/updates/optimizations.

This 110%. I've been using 8.1 + Classicshell for months now on my main rig. Keep in mind, my main rig has a 30" 2560x1600 monitor (and a 17" at 1280x1024). I STILL sometimes end up in Metro, thanks to some random app being the default program (even though I could have sworn I already changed all that). I have mine set to boot to desktop, I have classicshell, and I've disabled all the horrible "hot corners".

Seriously, if you think Metro is bad, try it on a large display.

If MS could just simply give us the option to COMPLETELY remove that garbage, and restore PROPER desktop functionality on my desktop, I'd be a happy camper. Metro is literally my only complaint with 8.1.

But seeing as how its STILL bugging me.....I'm honestly tempted to wipe it off here, say screw Microsoft, and install Linux on my daily rig.

One of my favorite quotes on Win8 came from some one on Regedit...it was something to the effect of:
Quote:
I've been using computers for near on twenty years and this is the first time I've had to google how to turn the (expletive deleted) thing off.

I myself felt really foolish the day I actually searched out how to close a stinking app...grabbing it with the mouse and dragging it away...yeah...I'd like a few minutes alone with the person that thought that up. For the first few days I was just killing the processes in the task manager because that was the only way I could see to do it. I've been using computers for 15 years and I am a domain admin on a enterprise level network, software programmer and tester, and many other things IT...and I couldn't figure out how to close a program.
