From my standpoint though...absolutely horrible. I'd rather teach people linux than this.

One of my favorite quotes on Win8 came from some one on Regedit...it was something to the effect of:
Quote:
I've been using computers for near on twenty years and this is the first time I've had to google how to turn the (expletive deleted) thing off.

I myself felt really foolish the day I actually searched out how to close stinking app...grabing it with the mouse and dragging it away...yeah...I'd like a few minutes alone with the person that thought that up. For the first few days I was just killing the processes in the task manager because that was the only way I could see to do it.

I've been using 8.1 for months now. At the expense of sounding like a derp (too late), YOU CAN CLOSE METRO APPS???? doh.gif

Yeah, if you mouse over the top middle of the screen your mouse turns into a little hand...you then can click and drag it down to the bottom of the screen like you are swiping it away. Real intuitive, huh.

I am sure there might have been one of those real hokey "help" videos that are included on Win8 on it, but I don't have time for that...not for something simple as this. And typing "how to close a frigging app" into a browser search is much more effective. Which I believe was my actual search string.

If I get bothered by metro 1 more time I'm wiping and going Linux lol.

I had no idea either.... I figured it would be like Android or iOS where you just open up more and more and the system kills programs as needed.

But if you really want to go wild, you can just press the X in the upper right corner. wink.gif

As the above posted mentioned you can perform the completely non-obvious gesture of dragging down from the top of the screen, until it becomes a little thumbnail which can be 'swiped' away.

Took some searching just to find this out. That or press Alt+F4. However I noticed Metro apps can linger in the background for hours after anyway, so not sure what's going on there. Even uninstalled an app due to this behavior originally.

This is obviously not true. There are users who enjoy the changes and Start UI, and I know some who do - they are basic users I'll admit though, liking the simplicity. Some will, however for those wanting more control I was constantly frustrated in what I paid for, and many others are too.

how about a mod which bring back aero. not necessary aero itself, but a better window frame so that each window is easily distinguish.

See my posts earlier in the thread wink.gif. I'm using the 20 posts per-page setting on OCN, which makes it easier to skim through threads. Really should be the default imo.

i just use the alt+f4 hotkey to kill metro apps when i want to leave them

i use mail and weather a LOT, the email is decent, it sucks for displaying emails with images or links, but its great for checking email QUICKLY. Weather is killer, I like it more than any other weather app I've found.

if you check your task manager you will see that some apps will remain running even if you alt-F4 them. I am not sure if the email and weather ones do though...I haven't used them

Thread Starter
thank you guys for all the info i appreciate it.

over all i just wish windows gave you option when you reformat or install OS to have Start8 or classic look for people instead of new metro/apps UI, boot time is definatly a improvement, unfortunatly Im still using HDD raptor so i don't see much more improvement. ( i wish i had money to spare)
Once you get use to windows 8.1 its actually really nice. I had to instal startisback and aeroglass to be comfortable using it. I honestly never use the apps or metro start screen.
