I said all that to say this, there may be better CPUs out there, they may be faster and do X and Y faster, but for me it's about price to performance, and the amd fx processors are a great deal especially if you already have a motherboard for it. Get a 6300, or a 8320, or a 8350 they're all good. Just see what kind of overclocks people are getting on that board, and see if it's possible!

If you have more money to spend, then go the intel route and buy a haswell i5 or i7.

It really comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

Edit: I just looked and you can overclock decently on your board, so I would really say that getting the fx would be a great upgrade for you! Just make sure your psu is adequate, as they can suck a lot of power under full load, and invest in good cooling!

Hope you find what you need! And if you can get an 8150 for really cheap, get it. If not buy the 6300, 8320, or 8350

ok thanks for the info and i will oc to iike 4.2ghz

Keep in mind that the newer FX (83xx) are faster clock for clock, because of the higher IPC and run cooler than the 81xx. So unless you find a really good deal on an 81xx, it generally would be better to get the 83xx, or the 63xx

make sure that it is the 125w version and not the 95w version 8120.
there were 8100s for OEMs that are supposed to be low wattage and dont overclock very well, but an 8120 for that price id say thats a pretty decent deal. thumb.gif

I actually am not sure! But more than likely it's a normal 8120, the 95w 8100 aren't very common. But I did see a few post about them here on the forum and a guy who couldn't overclock the 8100 that far. Anyways be sure to update your bios! And look into getting a decent cooler.

or what about a fx 6100 but i will oc it to 4.5ghz for video editing

I actually went from 4ghz i7 920 to 5ghz FX 8350.

Multi-thread the FX 8350 is way a head. Even in Cinebench the 8350 is way better. Transcoding and all of that stuff, there really is no competition. If you think there is you haven't used both CPUs for an extended period of time and you're just making guesses from reading reviews.

Games which don't scale to lots of threads (like League of Legends) actually saw some improvement on FX. Skyrim I lost some performance.

My upgrade path was basically

i7 920 with 6GB of Ram with 7970 -> FX 8350 with 16GB of ram with the same graphics card, HDs, etc.

You will see regressions in things that don't scale to lots of cores, but you will see smaller regressions in performance with 8350 than you will see gains. Meaning you get more and lose less by going 8350.

Your problem is you are looking at Bulldozer x100 series. You should be looking at x300 series (8320, 8350, etc).

I would suggest hunting for an FX 8320 at a good price. Perhaps you can find one used.

But you should stick with 8000 series and not go 6000 series. I realize AMD marketing likes to call them 6 and 8 core CPUs, but as far as performance goes it's best to think of them as 3 core and 4 core with a super-powered form of hyperthreading. The module approach and hyperthreading actually do share some of the same caveats (like running two threads on a module or physical/logical core hurts performance).
