When Was The Last Great Game Released? - Page 2

The breakthroughs happened near the end of the 90s and early 2000s.

Ocarina of Time had the open interconnected environments, the correctly implemented combat and game-play mechanics and the sense of an immerse world opening to the player for the first time in a 3D game offering almost complete freedom of movement. Everything before that either had serious game-play limitations, seriously small areas or was 2D.

Goldeneye brought the next level on the FPS genre and is the basis of the recipe used on modern FPS games.

Symphony of the Night was the peak of what deep 2D games could evolve to. It's the basis of what's used on "good" 2D games nowadays. Of course there are still many good simpler games that relate more to Super Mario Bros 3 rather than SotN.

Resident Evil made survival horror a major player in the gaming industry... to ridiculously levels if you consider how many games have zombies in them all these last few years.

Phantasy Star Online made MMO games accessible to casuals, even though it had limited success.

There are many other stuff that more or less defined how video games should be (re)designed as technological advancements were introduced.

The situation nowadays doesn't look all that good, with those immerse budgets going to the voice cast, the story, the pretty graphics, the soundtrack... and the game-play itself rarely included in the list. Not to mention the lack of innovation from stuff released by big publishers.
The only major source of innovation comes from community funded projects from kick-starter and the likes nowadays, and that's still a problem for projects that gather relatively few funds.

Now, there are a few recent games that can be considered good, or even very good... but great? After witnessing the bang some games had around the 2000s I can't be impressed by that, sorry.

Portal counts as something relatively recent and noteworthy here. It was impressive for what it was, even though it's relatively short with many elements not making it in the final version (with the sequel making up for this but not adding something really noteworthy like an open world).

I can't get out of my head that amongst the best games of the previous console generation are titles with very low budgets, download only (initially at least) indie games and sequels. With the only major exception being titles that follow tried old recipes.

The only thing noteworthy in the video game industry, that came from a big publisher these last few years, was Batman... and as soon as it started paying, they started making sequels.
At least the games are very good. Not great, but pretty good still... and that "pretty good" is amongst the top lists of recent games.

Hopefully more indie games will come to save the day, and hopefully they'll be sufficiently funded.

For me it was a long time ago Unreal Tournament 99, Command & Conquer 1, World of Warcraft, Diablo 1&2&LoD,
Starcraft 1&BW so that would be late 90's and beginning of 2000. There have been good games in recent years but no truely amazing games. To name a few The Witcher 2, Portal 1&2 maybe SP Stick of Truth (havn't decided yet but its the most fun i've had in a while with a game)

Maybe i'm just getting old tough. But i really think the gaming industry had its golden age back then currently there is nothing truely new going on just better graphics better graphics, coming up with stupid ways to make more money and spend 90% of the budget on other things then the game like marketing and voice actors.

Altough i'm looking forward to The Witcher 2 and The Division so maybe the list will change in a year from now.

A character of that attitude would have never even cared about the blight. They'd just go off and use their insane ability to shotgun health potions to take over some mountain village and live out the good life til the taint took them. Since that wasn't an option you were pretty much forced to pick certain party members if you were role playing at all and they consisted of an old woman, a whiney dink, and a rougue that had alright character...if a bit teen-agerish...but rogues were a pretty worthless class in the game's mechanics. Mods changed a lot of this, but I am judging it for the vanilla point of view

I wouldn't look to max my reputation with every companion in a playthrough, since it may not fit the character like you say. My human noble for example was a more heroic type, so there were plenty of companions he didn't get along with and he ended up not getting their sidequests and such. There's nothing wrong with this in my opinion, that's what other playthroughs are for; to see how different the game can become.

Rogue archer is good in the vanilla game. There are of course clear-cut best classes though (Mage and dual weapon warrior) so it's not perfect balance, but it's more balanced than most I've played. Most RPGs have clear-cut best classes from my experience.

Baldur's Gate is definitely on my list, I own Enhanced Edition on Steam as well as BG2 + all the expansions from gog. Whenever a Bioware RPG has save-game importing it's an absolute necessity, so I'll be doing that for sure. I back up all of my Dragon Age and Mass Effect saves to several different places... I'm really paranoid about that.

I agree with you about both NWN games, the fact that you can only have one henchman in the first game (and that you basically have to stick with that one for an entire playthrough) wasn't my preference. NWN 2's bugs are annoying, I can look past most of them though. The biggest problem for me is that Mask of the Betrayer is just unplayable; different main quests break whenever I try to play, so I can no longer advance. Such a shame since many say it's better than the original game in terms of writing. Some have even compared it to Planescape: Torment.

You may find this interesting. A mod for NWN2 to make it be Baldur's Gate 1. To be honest I've never played it all the through because it makes me want to play the original for some reason, but if I never played the original I might prefer it.

There is is no BG2 mod though frown.gif

I've seen that. Is it worth it, or should I play BG Enhanced (which is the original except with widescreen support basically)? There are shoddy remakes, and then there are gems like Black Mesa or the Resident Evil remake. They also remade Icewind Dale for NWN 2, and it uses all of the movies, soundtracks, and voice acting clips from IWD.

BF1942, I cannot believe no one has mentioned it. That was a genre defining game. It grabbed me and held me hostage for almost 2 years. No game had done that to me before and no games has done that to me since.

I think a lot of it for me has to do with devs/publishers slowly removing long time favorite features such as local Lan play, dedicated servers, modding, etc. Games are becoming money grabs (dlc) and regurgitated over and over. Thank goodness for the Indie devs.

So yah, while I've enjoyed games since, BF1942 was the Last Great Game Release for me.
