Windows 8.1 is superior in just about every way to Windows 7. The search function is much better and replaces the need for a windows menu, device installation is better, speed is better, i can go on and on. Gaming is not really any different other than having the latest DirectX available which eventually will give you much better gains. If you need the old menu back install Classic Shell. If you don't like metro, set it to boot to desktop.

In all honesty though, if you already have Windows 7, I'd suggest keeping with it. Windows 8.1 is not vastly superior in that it's worth spending the $100+ to upgrade a gamin rig to it. Use the $100 for hardware or games.

Thread Starter
Well I got a friend that have a extra Windows 8.1 key that they can give to me. So that's why I wanna know if I should just install Windows 8.1, since Ima wipe my SSD and HDD.

But the main thing I am concern about is compatibility with programs and games. But if it shouldn't be any problem, then I should install Windows 8.1, since its newer and something different I can try. I just need the stuff I need to work, to actually work on 8.1 lol.

I also don't plan on getting a touchscreen monitor unless I have too, which I don't think its too soon.

Man I am undecided on which right now. 7 or 8.1.

If you have 8.1 for free i say without a doubt jump on it. Install ClassicShell and learn to use it for more than a week before making a decision. I highly doubt you'll ever regret it!

What are some of your concerns about not working for you? Specifics?

I'm going say that this my opinion period I don't want any hate on this subject alright keep it civil conversation Thank you..biggrin.gif For me Windows 7 better at the moment because Windows 8 & 8.1 nothing but failure because Microsoft trying to hit the mobile market completely failed. Windows 8 is liked Windows Vista so many people complain it & Windows 8 is liked that now the cycle keep on going I feel that Microsoft just want to take your money period. Microsoft is forcing the consumer to buy the Kinect with the Xbox One not cool nothing but problems with all these consumer Giants force you buy that we don't want. Windows 8 have so many issues with drivers that why I skip it in the first placed this my opinion. I'm going wait till the next operating system release by Microsoft I hope is good...biggrin.gif

What drivers did you have problems with? I'm using a 10 year old unsupported Lexmark printer and was even able to get it to work fine using compatibility modes. The only thing I had a problem with was my Corsair Vengeance 1500 headset. The only reason I had an issue with it was because I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 the day it was released and Corsair's current Windows 8 driver did not work with 8.1. They have since fixed it but the default Windows 8.1 driver for it allowed it to at least function in stereo until Corsair got their stuff together.

I understand the hate for the ecosystem if you do not like the look or being forced to swallow a bit of change though. I hate OSX, itunes, and Linux for the same types of reasons smile.gif

Never had this issue, I think it's been exaggerated the same way people complain about IPS being absolutely unplayable.

Ignore the haters, they are just relics of a Windows 8 start menu/screen hate bandwagon.

The general opinion of Windows 8.1 now is that it is more performance orientated and streamlined compared to Windows 7...
I have personally noticed: Faster file searching, quicker opening and closing of windows, efficient cleaner interface, improved and responsive/fast file explorer, improved task manager, responsive and quick boot up and shut down.

I don't hate I'm only acknowledging the issues they have & should fix them in timely manner. I wanted to use Windows 8 I waited forever & then get slap in the face. Everyone is being affected paying more then get less that's from what I understand. I'm not to complain just saying that the point main issues of Microsoft still has. When Intel fan boys vs AMD fan boys World War III in here strong criticism hurts but just stating the truth that's all give me a break...rolleyes.gif
