What are some of your concerns about not working for you? Specifics?

I just want to make sure Steam, my games and a few other application/program can run properly on Windows 8.1, like Teamspeak, Live streaming software etc.

Windows 8 is liked Windows Vista so many people complain it & Windows 8 is liked that now the cycle keep on going I feel that Microsoft just want to take your money period. Microsoft is forcing the consumer to buy the Kinect with the Xbox One not cool nothing but problems with all these consumer Giants force you buy that we don't want. Windows 8 have so many issues with drivers that why I skip it in the first placed this my opinion. I'm going wait till the next operating system release by Microsoft I hope is good...biggrin.gif

Well I am getting it for free, but I am gonna give back my friend something for it. Like a lunch hahaha.

The general opinion of Windows 8.1 now is that it is more performance orientated and streamlined compared to Windows 7...
I have personally noticed: Faster file searching, quicker opening and closing of windows, efficient cleaner interface, improved and responsive/fast file explorer, improved task manager, responsive and quick boot up and shut down.

Good to know! Thank you for your input.

I'll give Windows 8.1 a go and see how I like it. If anything I can just format my SSD and HDD again and installs Windows 7 if all else fails.

Thank you everyone!

Edit: someone who uses 8.1 on a daily basis please confirm or deny this?

They integrated bing search into normal search. First thing i did when i installed W8.1 was disabling that. http://www.howtogeek.com/166949/how-to-disable-bing-from-the-windows-8.1-search-engine/

I find windows 8.1 better than windows 7.

The only reason I had an issue with it was because I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 the day it was released and Corsair's current Windows 8 driver did not work with 8.1. They have since fixed it but the default Windows 8.1 driver for it allowed it to at least function in stereo until Corsair got their stuff together.

I understand the hate for the ecosystem if you do not like the look or being forced to swallow a bit of change though. I hate OSX, itunes, and Linux for the same types of reasons smile.gif
Never had this issue, I think it's been exaggerated the same way people complain about IPS being absolutely unplayable.

You have the issue, you just mean you might not have noticed it

I do believe random 60hz IPS to be hilariously bad in comparison to strobed 120hz for motion quality and it's harder to see issues if they're being buried in other motion issues, but it's a kind of big deal. It's not everyone's fault if you're not sensitive enough to notice it on a slow screen that isn't made much worse because it's bad at motion anyway.

Been using 8.1 since it came out, and I gotta say, I like it a lot. I really, really didn't like Windows 8 when it first came out, but I got used to it.

Since you're starting fresh, I'd say go with 8.1 if you have the patience (it doesn't really take much, really). If you don't want to learn a new OS, pick 7. It's that simple!

Good luck!

With the latest updates Windows 8.1 with the new update 1 which fixed a lot of things W8 are fine. I found that Windows 8 have slightly better performance overall than windows 7. A lot of things are refined. Modern apps coming handy and with the latest update 1 you can navigate and use them with mouse and the gap between Modern ui and Desktop closed. Modern apps now have close and minimise buttons. You can pin them on taskbar if you like and they are like what windows was all those years. The majority of ppl who hated Win 8 along with me ofc was before Windows 8 updated to 8.1 and the hate was because of the Modern Start screen etc. Now all those things are fixed. The OS as an OS have no problem and is stable and slightly faster than 7. File explorer, task manager and the use of modern mobile apps along with your classic desktop apps is one of the few advantages of 8. I also noticed windows 8 have slightly better sound quality on my system. Also Windows 8 seems to "age" slower than 7 in terms of performance. Overall its a faster OS than 7 although nothing groundbreaking ofc. One thing I really love on 8 is the win+x or right click on start button menu. This little menu is magical. You can access shutdown options, task manager, disk management, command line, system, control panel etc all from one simple menu. I really love that.

If you can get 8.1 for free, might as well go for that. It does do some things a bit faster, and if you don't like the way it interacts with you, then Start8 or some other Start Menu replacement can restore the functionality of Windows 7. This isn't a situation like Windows Me or Vista, where "upgrading" could actually make your machine worse. The only problem with Windows 8, and it's not a problem for everyone, are the changes in the user interface. Since there's an easy "fix" for that, there's no reason to choose 7 over 8 if there's no added cost to using 8.

However, if you actually had to pay for Windows 8, there's no compelling reason to upgrade if you already have 7, or even if you were still on Vista, for that matter. People who are still on XP need to upgrade immediately, but I doubt there's anyone on OCN who doesn't already know that.

I understand, I'm just saying that so many people will just repeat what they've read online without even noticing it themselves.

Saying that the mouse issue that may or may not affect someone is a reason to avoid 8.1 completely is a bit overboard. Same with avoiding IPS for gaming, most people wont notice an issue with them. It's kind of like saying avoid buying this car at all costs, the brakes aren't acceptable! Not everyone drives 100mph and slams the brakes, lol.
