Questions regarding RAID & External HDD's.

Hi, everyone.

I've gotten into DJ'ing in the past few months to a year, and intend to start a lossless music collection. Due to the fact that I'm going to spend a lot of time and money on this.

I intend to have my library on an external HDD with a second external HDD that is a backup copy. The idea is that I use one of them and bring it around to parties to dj with a laptop/equipment.
But if something unfortunate happens like someone steals my hard drive, it's lost, get's wet (beer doesn't like electronics I hear). ETC. I can simply buy another relatively cheap external HDD and copy the backup over ASAP.

I came here for a bit of advice. I need to know a few things, like, if I'm buying external hard drives, is there a enclosure for them? Like a docking station to put near my computer at home?
I don't want to be disconnecting and reconnecting USB/eSATA cords every time I get a new song and having to manually copy it to each HDD every time. I'd rather have a hot swappable enclosure. With SPEED TOO. I believe the best I can afford is USB 3.0? USB 3.0 is faster than eSATA? I think.

So yeah.

External enclosure docking station thing for two external HDD's? That also has USB 3.0? Do those exist or is external enclosures solely for internal HDD's with traditional sata power and data plugs in the back of the drive?

And second, is there a way to automate the process anyways? I'm familiar with what RAID is but I've only used RAID 0 on my computer internal HDD's. Never made a mirror RAID array (raid 1 right?) with external HDD's.

I'm trying to spend aproxx 200 - 300$. for two hdds and a enclosure.

Thanks for ANY input/help/answers. I just wanna talk about external HDD's lol.

I have used one of these... and they work pretty well. USB 3.0, and the drive are easy to replace if needed

http://www.amazon.com/BUFFALO-DriveStation-2-Bay-Desktop-Drive/dp/B004J6GNUC Different drive sizes are available also

There are some others ( I have not used) like this http://www.amazon.com/Cavalry-eSATA-External-Enclosure-EN-CADA2B-ZB01/dp/B004KKXLLG but I would check reviews before buying...

ESATA can do up to 6 Gbit/s... USB 3.0 can do 5 Gbit/s although some systems have a boost mode for USB 3.0 that seems to speed things up.

I appreciate the reply. I think I didn't explain myself properly.

I don't wanna use internal HDD's. I plan to have my HDD's with me, in a backpack, in a car, on a countertop at a party when I DJ. It's gonna need to have a case, can't be just the plates and bare metal.
I'm pretty much forced to use external HDD's with a aluminum/plastic case around the drive, or w/e. It's the best I can get.

I'm looking for two external HDD's. What you showed me is pretty heavy duty. My drives don't even have to be covered. Just plugged in and lookin neat.

If USB 3.0 is 5GB/S like you said. I couldn't really care less what SATA does. Though I would prefer the fastest option available. Either way it's a lot faster than using my phones micro SD usb 2.0 connection.

Like this thing. Is what I want. But the problem is it's meant for internal drives to plug in. Not USB/Sata ports on a external drive.
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182280

the drives i wanna get look like this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178245

Doesn't have to be that particular one. Just has to be encased and protected some how. Problem is how do I get two of those into something like the rosewill dock.

Appreciate the reply so far. thx a bunch.

I don't have to have a RAID enclosure either. I'm okay with dragging and droppping as long as I don't have a mess of usb/esata wires on my desk. The backup doesn't have to be a 100% up to date backup at all times. I'm not in the government or a busniess. It's just music. I can just copy what im missing every few days. I just need an enclosure.

Sorry, you did say raid 1.. so that is what I thought you wanted. If you are just looking for USB 3.0 capable external enclosures, there are several out there..

I have used these... and like them. With the fan, your drive stays cool... without a fan, they get hot!

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182248

it also protects the drive pretty well, but they are a little more bulky than some.

Like I said, lots of them... http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007705%20600006254%20600006260%20600006293%20600077276&IsNodeId=1&name=USB3.0%20%26%20eSATA

I have not seen a hot swap external enclosure that will handle 2x 3.5" drives...

Thanks, I think what im asking for doesnt exist lol. External drives usually have a female usb or sata port. External closures only seem to accept the internal drives in ur computer.

Like this.

What i want is this

http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/06/11/1_620x433.JPG

To fit into the stuff you sent me or the rosewill one i posted.

It's okay. I think what i will do is just get two external HDD's and deal with the fact that i have two usb cables on my desk etc. lol

I appreciate the help.

a external hard drive is an internal hard drive inside a case that goes from the sata of the hard drive to usb/firewire/etc

what i dont understand is why aren't you using a simple usb flash drive.
less bs to lug around, no need for a power outlet, and you can get them in some seriously huge sizes.
when you want to pack it up and roll, you just unplug and drop it into your pocket.
on top of that, all HDDs that are external are crappy green drives. performance on those is laughable.

That is just a 2.5" drive in an external enclosure. That is all it is.

You can buy 2.5" drives... and you can buy 2.5" drive enclosures.... if that is what you are wanting. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182143
