A RAID array isn't going to help you. RAID in a simple sense is identified as a single drive. Your plan will break the RAID array.

As others mentioned, you have to have mostly likely 2 externals but have syncing/backup software to mirror the drives. As for drives if you don't have them, I like the Seagate Backup Plus (normal) since it's adapter is removable. This makes it easy to diagnose the external hard drive.

Okay, I had to go to work for 5 hours but I came back and read what you guys posted. It makes more sense now. Low performance high capacity hard drives are simply encased in some cheap plastic/aluminum (external enclosure) -this is still usually sufficient to protect them however. That's an external hard drive.

So would I buy two external hard drives with removable cases/adapters and use them in a docking station like the rosewill one I had posted earlier? When I remove them for storage/use with my laptop I simply put the case/adapter/enclosure on it again?

I hope I'm making sense.

PS: The reason I didn't consider a USB is because I want the freedom to DJ with my lossless files. Lossless files as you know are very huge in size and I intend for my library to be atleast 10,000 tracks including mixes when I'm done, far more than a USB could hold. HOWEVER. There is an exception, I also intend to convert all my lossless files into 320kbps MP3 files for use in say my phone. So I would have the freedom to use both a USB with the entire library compressed into MP3 320KBPS which is still a high quality format to DJ with. Or I could have the freedom to haul one of my HDD's with me in it's enclosure and DJ with my music in it's un-molested lossless huge memory glory.

I just want the option to use either. To do that I need external HDD's for the lossless storage space.

Also with the RAID. Are you saying that RAID would be useless since hotswapping/constantly disconnecting the drives for use would disrupt the RAID array in some way shape or form? I'm better off manually maintaining the copy myself whenever I update my library?

One more reply oughta do it, I think I've learned all I need too.

raid wouldn't help at all in your situation.
what i would do is find a usb 3.0 case
then buy a wd blue or black hard drive to put inside.

you could go ssd if you want it to have the best performance but then you have to weigh the price vs size
but if you have the cash to burn, you'd benefit greatly from the transfer speed of the ssd with those huge files.

for ssd
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707327
and w/e ssd, i'd go samsung.

many benifits to ssd also, no moving parts to worry about, super light, doesn't use much power, and thin enough you should be able to toss it in your pocket.

I've ruled out using SSD's for this atleast for now. I simply can't afford a SSD setup in this case. If anything I'd buy SSD's for my computer not for music.
I feel that one day in a few years I will have the coin to pickup a good SSD once they've dropped in price a little bit more and I am not as cash-strapped as I am now.

Sorry guys but I'm still a bit confused on what to get.

I know that I have to get two HDD's.

I intend for them to be indentical drives/contents etc.

I want them to have some sort of protection I cannot bring full 3.5 internal drives around with me and jerry rig sata cords to them.

My budget is $300. I don't mind spending it all.

I don't want to have the two drives randomly strewn around my desk if possible. If possible I'd like them to have a stand or docking station or something. BUT THIS IS NOT AN ABSOLUTE.

Just need two HDD's, with some sort of enclosure/protection if I take an individual drive out for use when I'm DJ'ing.

Oooh, just realised something. I don't have to have both hard drives be external.

Maybe the best decision is to get exactly what you posted above http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707327

Two internal 2tb drives from say seagate or WD. Put one inside my main computer to hold my music on there for djing at home/listening, and the other i will put inside the enclosure

and use to mobile dj with laptop/mixer/headphones.

I can have the redundancy of having an extra copy of my music, whilst being able to actually use my backup for purposes other than a backup.

Thats what I will do. Now to pick a hard drive...

not to mess with your idea, but wont the HDD get hot in that enclosure? i mean it might not be getting accessed much but you will want it spinning for fast access and your in a noisy hot club with little ventilation (lots of moisture) and lots of vibration. Id get TWO of those products above and a spare identical drive to put in it to leave in your (locked) bag just for safe keeping,

Good point, a 2TB 3.5 Drive is not gonna mix well (pun intended) with a non ventilated enclosure/high room temperature, vibration all sorts of stuff.

Okay, I think I may finally have a simple solution, no docking station or anything fancy needed.

I buy a 1-2TB WD Black or Seagate drive for my computer. Seperate from my windows partitioned RAID 0 Drives. And store music there for use on my computer and as a backup for my external drive I will use to DJ with.

And I will get a 1-2TB (same brand preferably) external drive, and load the same music from my computer onto it. For use when mobile DJ'ing, but it also serves a backup should anything happen to my computer's library.

Sound good?

Part of me thinks this is weird if I one day exceed 1-2TB and need multiple hdd's. but I plan to have the cash by time that occurs. I will simply go full SSD in my computer and hopefully for my music library as well.

K I'm getting

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178435 2TB

& http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834 in 2TB

That should be fine right?

The portable one is okay to use songs off of?

Like it wont be incredibly slow to acess the songs and load them into the virtual decks on my mixer software?
