What kind of oil can i put inside fan to quiet it down?

Thread Starter
So my video card fan has started making some noise as like the bearing is going out. Im not quite ready to upgrade GPU yet (waiting for gtx 860) so i want this to last a bit longer. Here is the card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162052

I am not sure if it is sleeve or ball bearing, what would be an acceptable oil to squirt inside it? Like i dont have much laying around the house, would vegatable oil work lol? I also have WD 40 which would probably quiet it down but i know WD isnt a great lubricant. I also have oil that came with my hair trimmers, would that work?

It might be likely that the bearings are sealed and there is no way to get oil into the bearings easily without damaging the fan. On my 5870 fan I could not access the bearing so I just threw away the old fan and heatsink. Your only other option is to buy a 3rd party cooler like Arctic Cooling and install that on it if you want to keep it running. If you can find a Accelero Twin Turbo II for $30-40 you can use it until you upgrade. Or just continue to accept the squeaks.

Well i said screw it and tried the oil that came with my hair clipper, low and behold it actually worked lol. There was a gap between the fan housing and i got some oil down in there. Noise didnt completely go away, but id say 80% of it did : )

What I have been doing for, geez, I guess the last decade or so, is using (TRUE) Syntheticmotor oil, addi ng just a drop or two into the bearings. It was initially just a "tide me over" kind of thing, as I always have 100-200+ quarts of Redline due to my main hobby (modifying and racing, road course/time trial/W2W/GTALMS/etc, BMW's and other European cars). It was either that or gun oil, and the Redline seemed like a better way to go.

It turned out that I never needed to get anything else, as being an Ester basestock oil (Group 5) and having proven itself hundreds of times over in fully built race engines of mine, keeping a fan spinning is like child's play for the stuff. I have found that it has the added benefits of quieting the fans, and not only preventing buildup of dirt but removing any existing crud.

The fans I first tried this with, some inexpensive Thermaltake 80-92mm sleeve/ball bearing fans, have been running nonstop ever since, with not one fan failing, since 2004!

from their website:

1894 George W. Cole, a resident of Asbury Park, New Jersey, compounds a mixture to accomplish three things in connection with the care and maintenance of a bicycle. These are: a lubricant, a rust preventive and a cleaner. The formula results in the famous 3-IN-ONE® Oil that accomplishes three separate things with one application.

sewing machine oil, clipper oil, or any 5w oil really is the best to use. to properly add oil you need to remove the fan and under nether the sticker is a cap you can remove. that is where you can add a drop drop or 2 of oil. (some fans don't have a removable cap. in that case just use a small drill bit(do it by hand) and punch a little hole where the cap would be. then add the oil and just put a piece of tape over the hole you made. smile.gif
