Rampage 3 Extreme - Want to upgrade to 24gigs of RAM

Thread Starter
I am posting here looking for a second opinion on my choice of 24 gigs of RAM.

1.) I would like to begin by answering the question I always get...

Why in the world do you need 24 gigs of RAM!?
I need 24 gigs of ram so that I can run multiple Virtual Machines and servers in my VMware Workstation lab, for testing purposes.

2.) For more information on my current build, below is a link to my Rig
My System

I am looking for high quality, stable memory. I also like corsair, since I have always had very good results with them.

I am currently looking at this kit: Corsair Vengeance 24GB (6x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CMZ24GX3M6A1600C9)
, from Amazon.
(I had checked Newegg, but they seem to be sold out.

Thank you for any comments and/or feedback.
It is greatly appreciated.

I think going 3x8GB should be easier on the IMc if that is a concern. This should also give you some more room to upgrade in the future if you wish to increase the resource usage of your VM's or increase the quantity of them.

I would grab 3 of these for a total of $207~ shipped.

Wold I see a significant performance hit if I used the kit I posted?
(This is the first time I am going over 20 gigs in a non-server environment.)

Also, I have never seen any 3x 8gig kits from corsair.

Additionally, future upgrades are not an issue.
If I had to jump to 32 or 64 gigs of ram, in the future, I would probably build a new, better rig.

Yeah they dont have any 3x8GB kits I could find. The single 8gig though will work if you purchase 3.

That stick is aimed at compatability and upgrading, thats the deal behind the loose stock timings.

The way I have always seen it, the stock timings are a starting point. Not once have I NOT taken my memory down to tightest stable timings at highest stable clocks. tongue.gif

its just in my blood.

OH, and the kit youy linked, severely overpriced IMO.

With the exception of buying loose 8gig sticks, is there another kit you would suggest?

I have spoken to many people and there have been numerous problems with the Rampage 3 not properly accepting all 24 gigs of RAM.
I had stuck with corsair since I have seen the most success with it in relation to the Rampage3 mobo.

And thank you for the feedback.

I really havent much experience with the 1366 platforms, because of age it may also be hard to find someone that knows their way around a rampage 3 enough to really help you out.

What I might recommend is to contact ASUS and ask them if they have a recommended way/product to get 24GB up and running hassle free ( without breaking the bank, if that matters ).

Thank you for your assistance.
I may as well call ASUS, as you suggested. However, I do not trust the over the phone customer support representatives, most of the time. (But I will try it.)

Oh nononono. I would never call.

You might get the out of the book troubleshooter who will have insanely old memory support lists in his 3 ring binder of QVL's. If you were to e-mail them I think the question might make it to someone who at least cares and has a passion for your answer much quicker with far less headache!

I thought about and I was backwards. If you call you could have a generic answer within minutes.

If you e-mail I feel you will get a much better and well thought out answer even if that means your inquire' gets passed around a little.

I am sure theres an ASUS employee somewhere with hands on that board and some RAM.

This is how my back and forth went with samsung on a small handful of products.
