7850 crossfire or 580 lightning extreme 3gb for 1440p

Thread Starter
I just bought:
2 MSI 7850's TF2 w/ 2gb of vram
1 MSI 580 Lightning Xtreme's w/3gb vram.

Basically trying to decide which to keep, and having a hard time picking.
I game at 1440p and need help choosing.

580
Pros:
Better single card performance
3gb vRam
Nice looking, and highest end 580 you can get

Cons:
Power Consumption and heat (I live in California so electricity costs a good amount per year)

7850's
Pros:
Better power Consumption
Better performance(*only in crossfire*)
Run cooler (room won't be as hot in summer) which may be negated since it's two cards putting out heat instead of one

Cons:
Only 2gb of Vram
AMD drivers (not sure if there are any problem with them but from what I hear they aren't as good)
Crossfire is buggy at times and multicard setups are a pain

So which card(s) would you keep and why? Thanks thumb.gif

Personally I'm partial to the 7850s in crossfire. Then again I sold them to you smile.gif

HAHA, rep'ed for making me laugh. Just trying to see what others input would be. Did you ever have any issues with Crossfire?

Only issue I ever had was using afterburner to overclock them. It would revert voltage back to stock randomly. Switched to evga precision x and no issues.

Depends on how well they both OC. The 580's should be faster though.

If you have a good PSU, and a good way to cool your 580's i'll keep them if it was me.

I had crossfire 7870s. I actually really loved them. Radeon pro is pretty key IMO. They did very well at 1440p too. I guess the real question is: can you sell the 7850s and buy another 3gb 580? If you could get another one, it would be the best choice.

I also think you should sell your Current GTX560Ti (Sig rig) both 7850's (mining craze for inflated used prices!) and try to buy another Lightning GTX580 3GB

The 3GB VRAM across a 384bit bus is perfect for 1440p

lol my bad, then there is no question the 7850 X-fire is the way to go. 7850's are almost as fast as 580's OC Vs OC. X-fire 7850 would be about 90% or more faster than a single 580

the 7850's would be much faster of course, but you might wanna go in for a better single gpu. on the one hand you have a setup with 2GB vram that's subject to drivers to get good performance out of it and on the other hand a power hog with a lame memory controller (COE of nvidia said this himself while promoting kepler) that doesn't perform any better at almost any resolution/setting than the regular 1.5GB version. (tested many, many times). all in all the two 7850's should do much better, but there's the smoothness factor to worry about on top of the usual crossfire support in games. maybe sell the gpus?
