Finally able to upgrade: is the note III the only choice on verizon?

I'm finally eligible for an upgrade and once again trying to decide on a new phone.

First, a little background:
  • I've been using the galaxy nexus on a two year contract. Never rooted it but that was because I didn't want to lose my settings/saves (I own titanium backup; doesn't do me any good when it requires root rolleyes.gif (I should mention rooting the GN wipes all data))
  • I wanted to save some money so I was contemplating getting an off-contract phone to keep my options open. You're supposed to save money over the two years even if the phone costs $600 but I'm not sure yet I can pull the trigger on that.
  • I'm still grandfathered in on the unlimited data thing. Though looking at my usage I shouldn't be concerned about it at all (I think less than 500 megs a month over last two years). I assume I'm going to have to let that go. Unless someone has some tips?
  • I'm kind of on a budget here and get a pretty good discount on the service through my employer on verizon so I'm kind of stuck on them right now

Some how it seems like a phone upgrade should be fun and not stressful. I'll try to enjoy it more.

So really my only requirements are that I would like to root the phone for both utilizing titanium backup and put on some ROMs and taking better quality pics would be nice though i assume just about everything newer than 2 years have superior cameras to the GN. I think I need something at least as big as the GN to accommodate my giant hands. What games I have I actually get my niece/nephew and the GN runs them perfectly so I guess that's not a concern smile.gif
Oh, and I would like that fancy new bluetooth 4/low power option for the new accessories coming out.

In my searching of off-contract phones (only on amazon so far) it seems like the Note 3 is really the only option. I saw a thread mentioning the LG G2 but non-removable battery is kind of a deal breaker for me.

I guess my only reservation about the note 3 is that it could be too big. Not sure i'll be able to get accustomed to it.

In summary I have a few minor questions:
  1. If one is it really worth it having an off-contract phone, specifically a Note III, on verizon long term money/other provider options-wise? Seems like the MVNO list is kind of short for them even if I did decide to switch.
  2. Are there any phones, preferably well known brand (HTC, Motorolla, LG and samsung are about the only recognizable brands, right?), outside of the G2 and Note 3 to choose from (so far as I know the nexus 5 is not yet on verizon)?
  3. Does anybody know of any phones coming up that would be worth waiting for?

If verizon offer it (I'm not in your country so i don't know) and you like large phones the sony xperia z ultra is a nice phone, more like stock android, with a 6.4 inch screen. The sony z2 is coming out soon as well and has been well received. Not a sony fanboy, just a couple of alternatives you may have overlooked.

on Verizon, I went from a galaxy nexus to a note 3, best phone I've ever used, though if there was one downside it'd probably be the camera, though that's still superior to the nexus, best part imo is the amazing battery life

At this point I'm leaning that way. I'm definitely looking into those sony ones though.

How about the HTC One? Or the Galaxy S4? I guess the S4 is kind of "old" at this point (almost a year, right?). I don't know that I'd notice though.

Thanks for the feed back guys. If anybody has any more keep it coming thumb.gif

I had the s4 when it first came out and was blown away with it, sold it off cos i needed some quick cash, picked up another s4 a couple of weeks later in which time my mate had got a note 3 and i was totally underwhelmed by my s4. The note 3 is a nice phone but i feel it is very work orientated and if you won't be using it for work, i feel there are better options. For me it was the z ultra, but that wouldn't suit everyone, but i like watching movies and tv shows i download on it and the 6.4 inch screen is great for that. If your going to be out and about using it for calls all day tho it would be a terrible phone for you. It's really about what you need and finding one that meets those requirements.

I have the LG G2 and don't think the non-removable battery is a problem at all unless you have unusual requirements. My last phone was a Galaxy S2 and I barely ever made it through a day of moderate use on one charge, heavier use meant barely making it through on two charges. Now I can go 2 days without a charge and the thought of topping off midday wouldn't even occur to me. Based on my usage with all radios/sync on and auto-brightness, I can get as much as 6 hours of screen time with day or more of idle time out of a single charge.

So OP what phone did you end up getting?

Ended up doing a factory reset/root combo of the galaxy nexus. Feels like a new phone. Part of it was not wanting to lose my unlimited data plan and partly a larger phone has limited appeal. I think the S 5 is coming to verizon so I might look into that eventually if I have to. Pay $700 or whatever I think I can keep the data that way. I'm actually kind of happy like this with my GN.
