    Move to the 1200W, stupid.

Thanks for the reply TwoCables, haven't really considered the effects of load on psu life before. I normally just try to keep a good amount of overhead for when I do stupid things like run Prime95 and Furmark concurrently. Rig should be able to take anything if it can do that thumb.gif.

Also can't a 290x hit 300+ watts under load. I would think that if you overclock a few things, add some fans and pumps, you would be well over 1000 watts under load. I'd go with a 1500w just to be safe. Don't think I could deal with the worry of being able to kill my pc by starting the wrong program.

290x power usage:

How about simply going with dual PSU's? With some extra volts on the 290X's, a 1200W won't be enough for the whole system anyway.

How long would anything last if it were asked to be at full-bore 24/7 or very very close to it?

No, I'm recommending that he "go big" because of the 24/7 full-load power draw.

But my car isn't rated to run at "full bore" 24/7 for years at a time, the PSU is! Many many devices run at "full bore" 24/7 for years at a time because that is what they are designed to do. I've got pumps that have been running for years with no letup.. And as I mentioned I have PCs that have been folding for years near their max rating; I have one corsair 750 watt PSU that has been providing 700 watts continuously for YEARS now and still works perfectly fine. Heck just using your own logic, if running "full bore" 24/7 is a problem for the PSU why isn't it for the video card or the CPU or the motherboard or anything else in the computer?
Listen I'm not trying to start an argument here, I'll drop it after this post. But really this isn't accurate information. A *quality* PSU is rated to provide a specific amount of power 24/7 for the life of the product. That's what the rating means. Obviously yes low quality PSUs may be mislabeled or play games with the peak power rating versus continuous power rating but that isn't the case here we're talking about good units. A good, quality PSU rated for 1000 watts continuous power can and should be expected to provide that 1000 watts continuously, 24\7, for multiple years with no problem or loss of efficiency. There wouldn't be much point in labeling their wattage if they provided some arbitrary lower amount then what it says on the label.
I know my post count here is kind of low and that may hinder my credibility somewhat, but I think if you ask a credible expert on the subject they will tell you the same thing.

Dude, if you want to run a PSU at 100% for days/weeks/months on end then go right on ahead. No one is stopping you. thumb.gifBUT, ask anyone with more knowledge on the subject than you and they will tell you that it is NOT good practice at all to run above 80% capacity for long durations of time. Your evidence above is the exception, not the rule.

See now this is where it gets complicated... Someone suggested (on Reddit) that I get a Silverstone SFX power supply, and use a Bitspower Multi-PSU module in order to hook them up in parallel. That'd give me more than enough wattage for an extra 290X, even at full bore. With adequate cooling they can take around 230W, not the higher almost 300W on air cooling.

Now how would I get dual PSU's to start and function at the same time?
