Help with Motherboard choice

post #1 of 18
Thread Starter
Hi all,

Trying to decide what motherboard to buy for my new gaming rig. Planning on running a multi-GPU set up with the GPU & CPU both overclocked to a moderate level.

Currently narrowed my choices down to the following motherboards:

* Asus Maximus VI Hero
* Gigabyte G1 Sniper 5
* MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming
* MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX
* ASRock Z87 OC Formula

All these boards seem to be able to run a 3-GPU setup and provide a solid foundation for a bit of overclocking. I'm leaning towards the Asus Maximus VI Hero, with the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 5 is a close 2nd.

Is there any benefit in a motherboard that can run multi-GPU's at 16,8,8 instead of 8,4,4? Or is it a bit of a sales gimmick atm?

Any pro's & con's for any of the motherboards mentioned above?

Are you planning 3-way Crossfire or SLI?

Only G1 Sniper 5 can do 3-way SLI. The cheapest board with that capability is Asus Z87 WS.

Otherwise, for 3-way Crossfire all but Asus board are OK because they will run at 8/4/4 at 3.0 speeds while Asus does 8/8 at 3.0 and 4 at 2.0.

I don't know why those PLX z87 boards even exist. If someone's got enough money for tri SLI (or even dual SLI), then they've got enough for x79. PLX boards are a sales gimmick because you can't pull extra lanes out of thin air. If you want the extra lanes, then just use a chipset that actually has them instead of one that doesn't+a latency inducing PLX band-aid.

Don't buy any Asus z87 board until the drooling idiots fix the frozen RTC bug/double booting issues.

Yeah I'm planning on running 3-way CrossFire, or 2-way Crossfire at minimum. Not really considering the nvidia cards atm, unless the 800 series brings a decent improvement.

Will the Asus, running the 3rd card @ PCI-E 2.0 x4, provide much of an issue in allowing me to get the most out of the 3rd card? If yes, I'll scratch that off my list right now!

And what is the Asus RC bug/double booting issue? Haven't read anything about it yet.

Yes, PCI-E x4 at 2.0 is a big issue. It bottlenecked GTX680/HD7970 level cards by good ~ 20 up to 10% in some games IIRC. 3.0 is fine. R9 290 cards are like 50% faster, so.

Is that purely for the better support for 3 or 4-way Xfire/SLI setups?

Does the X79 chipset offer any other benefits, just out of curiousity?

Oubadah explained it already. Z boards don't really support more than two gpu's very well as the lanes of traffic resort to using PLX instead of having the full lanes dedicated. Might want to do a bit of research on this before pulling the trigger on 3 way gpu setup so you end up making the right choice.

You're right, a bit more research seems to be required. I had thought/assumed that the Z87 boards would be able to run 3 or 4-way GPU setups but it seems I've been caught with a bit of a marketing gimmick (PLX chip)!!

Makes sense that the X79 boards would be better suited from actually having dedicated PCI-E lanes. I'll look into it today and see what I can find out, as I'm pretty keen on a 3-way GPU setup.
