Creating a loop with 2 pumps

ok so first, my CPU block is the Apogee Drive-II. it has an integrated MCP35X pump. it has been running with a rad + Swiftech res as the only other extras.

now, im currently setting up a second loop for my GPUs. my intention was that having the GPUs on a second loop meant better cooling but also if i swap and change them around, or ditch the blocks or whatever, it wont interrupt the CPU loop which wont be getting changed for a long time as i love that chip.

so currently:

CPU Loop:
Swiftech Res - Apogee Drive-II block/pump - 240mm rad - back to res

then for the GPU loop i have a spare Swiftech MCP-655 pump, installed it in an XSPC dual-bay res that can integrate it, and i have a 360mm rad with 2x EKFC blocks. so;

GPU Loop:
XSPC res - MCP655 pump - GPU Blocks x2 (linked Parallel via EK terminal) - 360mm rad - back to res

fitting it all in, is a bloody nightmare. i have finally found a way, BUT, i was thinking... could i set this loop up so that it all shares the same reservoir? essentially a dual-pump loop? the MCP35X attached to my CPU block can go from 1300rpm - 4500rpm so flow shouldnt be an issue.

if so, how would i set this up? im assuming after the XSPC res would go to the MCP655 pump first, kinda has to due to the dual-bay res integration, that the pump would then go into the CPU block/pump, then 240mm rad, then GPU blocks, then 360mm rad and back home to res?

so:

XSPC Res - MCP655 pump (this initial link cannot be avoided) - Apogee Drive-II pump+CPU Block combo - 240mm rad - GPU blocks (x2 SLI linked) - 360mm rad - XSPC res.

would that work? it would seriously save me so much space if it would. and look way neater. could just install quick-disconnects on the GPU blocks for when they get changed out, although chances are i would only upgrade to another water cooled setup.

my guess is that it should work, even though the pumps are different your max head pressure would be the same as your stronger pump (the weaker pump will just help push the water as much as it can). It will also add a redundancy if one fails. Do you have alot of restriction in your loop? You can just not plug in the one built into your res.

nah not much restriction i dont think. and i was going to just not use that pump, but i dont think the one integrated with the CPU block will be strong enough to cool an overclocked 3930k and 2 overclocked GTX 780s.

will investigate max flow of the MCP655 and just set the CPU block to that speed and see how it goes. i was only really worried about 2 things -

1 - the flow will be extremely resisted going from one pump to another

2 - if the first pump is pumping too hard into the second, could it blow out the seals

if none of those are an issue, im good smile.gif

When two pumps like these are used in a single loop neither of those things will happen. The pumps are centrifugal, and the physics of how they work means one pump will never over power another or slow another down. All they do is assist each other so flow through the entire loop and both pumps is improved. This is true even if one pump is at max speed and the other is at minimum speed. So there is no need to attempt to match their flow or power because it just isn't possible. Just having them both at low, mid or high speed is fine. In a system like this both at low speed would be plenty of flow.

Having said that either of these pumps is plenty to do the whole loop itself.

yep ok so an update...both pumps is a bit much, the water is foaming. have disconnected the block pump and just running the MCP655. my main problem now, the 2 barbs connected to the reservoir are bloody leaking frown.gif dont have a shifter at home, have to head to Bunnings tomorrow and get one.

the MCP655 on its own managed to push the water through but. lots or air locks but its almost ironed out. will post pics when done.

just a friendly heads up...for anyone wondering, just run a single pump tongue.gif

A shifter????
What sort of barbs are you using? If they are just normal watercooling barbs they seal with an o-ring so only slight force is needed. I only ever finger tighten fittings gently and have never had any leaking.
Maybe take a look at the o-rings on the barbs and the surface of the res they are pressing against. Make sure both are clean and free of any debris.

hhaha yeah i know had to be careful. it was a fight actually getting them in to the threads on the reservoir. i managed to get it, needed the little shifter and gave them a few more turns, Hulk would have struggled doing it by hand. only needed bout a quarter turn on each barb and no more leaks smile.gif

FINALLY up and running, had major dramas with my BIOS. cards are sitting @ 24c each idle
