FreeNas, Plex and MiniDLNA

Holla all you funky server experts biggrin.gif

I recently set up a FreeNas Box (9.2.0) to function mainly as a media server and image/document backup machine.

My problems started when I installed the Plex (0.9.9.5.411_1) and MiniDLNA (1.1.0_1) plugins, installed Plex, added media to it correctly as all smartphones and the blu ray/PC all recognised
and streamed the media, two days ago started the blu ray head into Plex and lo and behold all files were "corrupt or unsupported", reinstalled plex built the library back up all good. Yesterday
start the blu ray again "corrupt or unsupported", copied a file to a thumb drive plug it into the blu ray and what do you know it works fine. All the files also played perfectly fine through my PC

Not wanting to have to reinstall and rebuild the library every other day I installed MiniDLNA and configured it as such:

Source goes: /mnt/Movies/SciFi/Folder

Destination goes: (mnt/Movies/jails_2/minidlna_1)/media/Folder

The folder goes into the directory but all files inside the folder disappear, so just an empty folder goes into the directory.

Specs for the NAS Box are:

1090T
UD7 990FX Motherboard
8 GB GSkill Sniper Ram
3 x 2 TB drives for storage
FreeNas 9.2.0 off USB

Any help would be VERY appreciated as this is starting to make me tear my hair out sozo.gif

Kind Regards

I'm actually starting to build a similar setup.

A little more information is needed to figure out what is going on.
1. Have you tried installing FreeNAS on a hard drive?
2. Can you access the files directly after you get that error (e.g. by playing the movies locally via VLC player)?
3. Are you using the Sata ports on the motherboard or on an expansion/raid card?
3a. If using an expansion/raid card, which card are you using (company/type/model)?
3b. Are you using RAID/JBOD?
4. Are your hard drives new or old?
5. What drives are you using (company/model)?
6. What version of PLEX are you using?
7. Does the problem only occur when trying to open Blueray movies or does it occur when playing anything?

Other thing to consider is the format that the BluRay's are ripped to. If you are running Plex from the USB it may not have enough throughput to accommodate any transcoding that may be required for the BluRay videos.

If possible it may be worth it to install the OS onto a HDD/SSD in the system so you don't have any bottle necking issues.

Helo Mr Ph1sh thanks for the quick response. biggrin.gif

In answer to your questions.

1: I have not tried to install FreeNas on a hardrive as the only drives I had were 1TB+, but I recently procured a 160 GB Hardrive so I might give that a shot
2: I can access all the files through my PC directly, when MiniDLNA sets up the directory in my media folder it only sets up a folder, not the actual media file, I can point my PC towards the original location and play it from there.
3: Only using the SATA ports on the motherboard (0 - 5)
3A: I only have two drives Raid (Samsung 1 TB striped) for my music, they are matching models
3B: Using Software Raid (AMD)
4: All drives are approximately 1 year old, I ran multiple Disk Check programs and SMART is telling me that they're healthy
5: This is the one problem that I can think of and according to the FreeNas forums this is a big no-no, they are a mix and match bunch (bar my two music drives in raid which match) but each drive has it's specific media type, I don't have say Movies spread over two unmatched drives, drives are as follows: Drive - Raid Type - Media
1 + 2 - Samsung (HD 1035SJ) 1 TB - Raid 0 - Music
3 - WD Caviar Green (WD20EADS) 2 TB - No Raid - Movies
4 - Seagate Barracuda (ST2000DM001) 2 TB - No Raid - TV Series
5 - Samsung (HD154UI) 1.5 TB - No Raid - PC Backup
6: I am using Plex 0.9.9.9.5.411_1 installed through FreeNas itself, it installed fine and it was a breeze to add to the jails (although a wee bit time consuming tongue.gif) but it's a bit pedantic when trying to stream media through my 2 blu ray players (Sony & Pioneer) and my SIII, but it's sweet as when streaming to my PC.
7: Any form of Media streaming results in the same thing.

One more thing that's just occured to me in the last few minutes is that I'm using the onboard Realtek Ethernet port which if IIRC can cause issues with FreeNas, so I will invest in a NIC card next payday

When Plex was working even heavily encoded MKV were playing around 1.4 MBps with the very occasional stutter but mostly watchable, it was just frustrating that it played fine one day and the next day every file was "corrupt or unsupported". I originally installed FreeNas onto a thumb drive because I wasn't going to waste a 1 TB drive on a OS that had such a tiny footprint, now that I have a 160 GB drive I can install onto that and still have plenty of storage

EDIT Gaaahhhhhhhh, my board may have just died so I've had to bring my freenas system out of retirement as my main rig mad.gif

That would be awesome mate, sorry for the late reply but I've finally got my PC back up and running, seems my powered 4 port usb hub was being a little mischievous and throwing spanners into the works biggrin.gif

I am currently using Nero MediaHome 4 essentials to serve my media to the PS3 and the Blue Ray streamers. Is there better/easier software that you recommend?

I use Plex. It is pretty flexible and has remote streaming options, so I can stream to my phone, tablet, or a remote computer anywhere I've got internet.
