Help with a silent CPU cooler for HTPC, please.

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I don't know where I should post this, being that there is a water cooling and an air cooling section. I am open to any type of suggestions, though.

I am looking for a silent aftermarket cooler for my HTPC. I have an i5 4570 and a CoolerMaster 130 Elite case. Does anyone have any suggestions for that case and CPU?

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

If you want a good, low cost air cooler I recommend the Coolermaster Hyper 212 with Push-Pull fans. Should give you good temps and having push-pull will allow you to run them at a lower RPM than just a single push or pull. Too tall, wouldn't fit

If you want an AIO unit, the Corsair Hydro Series are nice. Depending on how much space you have there are singe 120mm radiators of 25mm(H50, H55, H60) and 38mm(H70, H80) thicknesses and a 240mm radiators model(H100, H105) as well. Again, push-pull would be ideal for a combination of performance and silence. This would be the route I would take.

Then there is the option of doing a full custom loop, but for only cooling an HTPC CPU, I think a custom loop might be a little unnecessary.

Thank you for your response!

Here is a link to the cases specs, as I am not entirely sure:

http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mini-itx-elite-series/elite130/

However, I did find this:

VGA card length: 343mm / 13.5 inch
CPU cooler height: 65mm / 2.5 inch
PSU length:
180mm/ 7.1 inch (w/ less cable management)
142mm / 5.6 inch (w/ full cable management)

My budget is...well, I would like to keep it a "budget" as possible.

Thanks!

CoolerMaster 130 is a pretty cramped case but you should be able to fit an 120mm AIO in it. That's going to be by far the most effective cooling method you can stick in one of thous.

If you go with air cooling then you are pretty much stuck with tiny low profile coolers like the Noctua NH-L9i

I really don't think there is enough space between the socket and the PSU for anything much bigger the that. You should measure the clearance. Its border line but perhaps it would be possible to squeeze in something like an Thermalright AXP-100.

Its labeled as 58mm high but I don't know if that includes the fans or not.

It looks like an AIO unit with a 120mm radiator is going to be your best option in that case because of the height restriction. They have an example picture with the radiator mounted to the front 120mm intake fan, and that looks like really the only place to mount a radiator

That case shows to be able to take a 120 AIO Radiator in the front. http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=10083&product_name=Elite%20130

This shows to be compatible on the Manufacturers page: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103180 (Push/Pull 2 fan AIO)

Not the cheapest... but a good 120 AIO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103183 and should fit, since the Seidon has two fans also.

This is a temp shot of testing of the two above (in Italian, but you can see the temps) http://www.bitsandchips.it/images/2013/08/30/Coolermaster/t1.jpg

My advice is a Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B. Have one myself in my htpc cooling my Phenom 9550. Totally inaudible, temps are around 30-40 degrees in XBMC.

Thanks for the responses!

I was just going to stick with the stock cooler, and although it is relatively quite, I can still hear it a bit. So, I figure that I would try to look for something else.

That doesn't look too bad, but I don't know if it will fit in my case.

As far as the AIO goes, would I have to get fans that are quite, or do you know if the ones that come with certain models more quite than others? Also, how would I configure the push/pull? Would the air be blowing out of the case or into the case for this particular case?
