Check your BIOS and see if it has something called "Secure Boot" - and if it's set to "Windows UEFI" - change it to "Other OS" and see if it fixes the problem. I had a similar thing going on with Windows 2012 Server and it took me several days to figure out what was going on.

I ran the wizard, so I'll restart.

I can't do another update attempt right now... Personal problems... Roof being istalled, sick dog.

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Hammong... I'll try that later after I see if this works first. Thanks for that, I will check it.

OK, the link posted from Cgipson1 seems to have fixed it. Thanks for that. I remember using that a long time ago! I never would have found it on my own... redface.gif

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Now because of all my putzing around I accidentally booted from my old platter drive, so now the boot sequence stops to give me a choice of:

Windows 7 (the correct one)
Windows 7 Recovered (the old one on the platter drive)

It didn't do that before. How do I get it just to boot directly into "C SSD" drive without choosing?

You will need to edit your Boot using MSCONFIG.EXE... in the BOOT menu...

Just set the one you want as default... and delete the other...

Glad that got it going for you! thumb.gif

Well, it did it again after I installed a dozen updates this time. Then I ran this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

The trouble shooter didn't fix everything. It left some red "X"'s. The trouble code was 0x80070057. I'll look into that.

I'm working in this Knowledge Base:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/preparing-to-configure-windows-do-not-turn-off/61a2cb75-748c-417c-a233-3d7d29e00648

And I'm looking at an "Upgrade in place", since things are obviously FUBAR. Will I have to run the activation gauntlet again? I have Win7 Home premium upgrade on a reformatted SSD.

I was wondering if I can change the boot issue with jumpers on the platter drive? I will dump the Win7 installation on that drive if I ever get this one straightened out.

Boot issue with Jumpers on the platter drive? Unlikely... unless the jumpers are set incorrectly to start with. Those usually have nothing to do with boot status.

You didn't by any chance delete the 100mb reserve partition that windows creates on the install, did you? Have to have that.. or things get strange.

At this point, I would seriously consider a re-install... sound like something is messed up, and it may be difficult to find and fix.

An upgrade in place... may not fix the issue. A clean install would. Unless you run the upgrade as a Clean Install... and just give it your Reg key when needed... I believe that is possible.

Let's wait and see...

Itshay. They are all showing as "failed". But I have 43 new ones.

If this fails, I'm reloading my image. The hell with it.

Well, I think it's fixed.

I did everything on this except restore IMAGE and upgrade in place.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997

What I think really did it was after each failure, I did restore at the most recent point, then ran SFC / SCANNOW from the command prompt as admin, and restarted.

But I did so many thing I'm not really sure what worked, except to say SFC found and acknowledged repairs it made.

Finally, they are all in I guess. There are a still some labeled failed in the Update History, so I don't know what will become of those.

Hopefully it keeps working.

Thanks to all for the help and encouragement! If it goes to hell again, I'll be back! LOL
