Is it possible to install Windows 7 Pro OEM on a PC with Windows 8/8.1?

I hope reverting a system to Windows 7 from Windows 8 or 8.1 doesn't require the Retail copy of Windows 7.

Could I install an OEM version or is the motherboard binded to Windows 8?

The retail copies of 7 are expensive and rare.

BTW, my brother is looking to buy a Dell Opteron to present his thesis. He doesn't want to use Windows 8 or 8.1.

I hope all is not lost.

No you just have to create a partition on your hard drive/ hard drives for it like with any other OS.. but I would downgrade from 8.1/8 to 7 any day. 8 is god aweful

Depends on the OEM version...are we talking an OEM disc you bought from say newegg or got for free like some of us through MS educational? If one of those then you can install it on the any computer that it isn't too old for (IE anything for the next few years). If it's an imagine from that came with another computer then it likely won't work as well because they'll probably have bundled drivers in the image and other bloat. It's possible but not guaranteed.

And if you guys are seriously that anti-WIN8 you better start looking for a new OS because Windows never changes direction(Everyone cried about Vista's GUI as well though not as much as 8s). And all of this grief over a simple GUI change? Seriously, buy/install one of the anti-metro programs if you're that against it but don't skip WIN8 because it generally has better things in it (that's not saying there aren't things it does worse than 7).

I don't like it because it throws up inaccurate benchmarks due to the RTC being controlled by windows instead of the hardware or something like that

I would have linux but I need another ssd and I game too much

If it's just because he hates Metro, why spend $100 to buy an OEM copy of Windows 7 when you can restore the look and feel of Windows 7 with a $5 purchase of Start8?

There are some improvements to Windows 8 under the hood, and if you have 8 already and just hate Metro, why not save a pile of cash, keep the improvements in Win 8, and just restore the Win 7 UI? Downgrading to 7 in this particular situation is a bit silly if you ask me.

Windows 7 is getting rare? Huh, wonder how long I should hold on to this sealed 7 Home Premium system builders disk I have. I was going to use it on a build for a friend but it didn't pan out and I actually like 8.1.

OP: Yes you can, but you shouldn't. Here's what does work, is cheaper and will allow you to benefit of the W8 evolutions without being forced to use Metro:
