The retail copies of 7 are expensive and rare.
BTW, my brother is looking to buy a Dell Opteron to present his thesis. He doesn't want to use Windows 8 or 8.1.

Depends on the OEM version...are we talking an OEM disc you bought from say newegg or got for free like some of us through MS educational? If one of those then you can install it on the any computer that it isn't too old for (IE anything for the next few years). If it's an imagine from that came with another computer then it likely won't work as well because they'll probably have bundled drivers in the image and other bloat. It's possible but not guaranteed.
And if you guys are seriously that anti-WIN8 you better start looking for a new OS because Windows never changes direction(Everyone cried about Vista's GUI as well though not as much as 8s). And all of this grief over a simple GUI change? Seriously, buy/install one of the anti-metro programs if you're that against it but don't skip WIN8 because it generally has better things in it (that's not saying there aren't things it does worse than 7).
