[AH] Sprint Chairman Says US Internet Speeds are “Horrible” And He’s Fixing It - Page 9

I thought the 50/5 line I'm getting for $65 from TWC was bad. I can see now some of you guys are getting shafted even more than me so I will refrain from complaining from this point forward.

Luckily Google fiber is coming to Charlotte/Raleigh soon. After they drive TWC into the ground, I'm hoping they come to the Greensboro area so that I don't have to live in Charlotte again. I'm considering moving back just so I can give TWC the middle finger and a few choice words when I finally cut them loose.

Considering the capabilities available to the major US providers, the service and their charges are downright pathetic... $45/month for 10/1 service here in Cincinnati OH. Max speed for any local is 100mbps, usually for a major upcharge. I think Google is the up and coming major progressive in the ISP market now and everywhere they go will be good for the customer. I've mentioned it in other threads, but Cincinnati is practically begging Google to come here, so hopefully we get headway on that in the next few years. That would majorly help out. Lots of places in the Cincinnati area, even central Cincinnati, get very poor service and speeds, with only 1-2 providers to choose from. I would love to have Cox, Comcast, or even Verizon... but none serve Cincinnati. We get Cincinnati Bell or TWC... or satellite rolleyes.gif

As much as I hate the idea of Google having full blown and complete access to our information...if none of the other ISPs get their crap together I feel like we'll have no choice but to let Google spy on absolutely everything we do in order not to get shafted on net services. Just sad.

At least Google tells you what they are watching and what they are going to do with it.

And I care not a bit what Google does with my browsing information so long as my things meant to be secret, are still secret (e.g.: passwords, bank information, social security #, et al.). It may be misplaced, but compared to all others, I place more trust in Google.

My 4G when I get it through Sprint is actually twice as fast as my cable on upload. Come to think of it...why are Telecom Networks more balanced with equal down and up speeds while cable companies give us less than half at best for up compared to down?

There are very good reasons DSL and Cable internet are not symmetrical and have the slower upstream speeds... it is all in the details of how it all works. wink.gif
Also, most people are usually more concerned about the download speeds...

With cable, you have more downstream channels than you do upstream, and the downstream channels also have more bandwidth each channel.
DSL has similar reasons though it is possible to have a symmetric DSL connection, 1.544 Mbps down and 1.544 Mbps up - can be quite expensive.

Fiber (Ethernet) is another story... very easy to get symmetrical speeds.
Some fiber to the home connections do have the fiber running to the home, but they then terminate with a cable modem, and you are back to the same limitations cable subscribers have though you don't need to worry so much about the congestion that a neighborhoods internet traffic can have on a normal cable connection.

Cell towers with LTE in many cases have fiber running to them. It comes down to the wireless technology to determine what kind of down/up speeds you get. I'm not too familiar with how all that works and why you don't actually see symmetrical speeds on cell phone.

I got a question for you, verizon/att was sued because they offered unlimited but charged for teathering, and idea why sprint is allowed to keep doing it after it was ruled unlawful to verizon/att?
