Considering switch from AMD CPU

My current rig is

CPU: Phenom II x6 1055T 3.8GHz
GPU: R7870
MOBO: Biostar TA970 (Biggest pile of junk on earth and likely failing)
PSU: Corsair CX750M
HHD: 1tb and a 1.5tb and a 64GB SSD
RAM: 8GB

My computer is the server for all the HTPCs in my house. The way we have them configured is that the HTPCs record TV raw and send it to my computer over a dedicated network where I encode the video with Handbrake. With my Phenom II it takes about 2.2 hours to encode a 1 hour 1080p video on Handbrake's High Profile mode which yields great results in my opinion. However, since my family loves to record tons of TV, I would like it to be faster so I can game more and encode less. So now that I am shopping for a new motherboard, I wanted to go with the Crosshair V which is the best mobo you can get for AMD, then I decided, why not get an 8350 or 9590 with that, so my encoding will go faster, but then I realized that it would cost me around $500 to do so, but then I had an epiphany, AMD has abandoned the AM3+ socket for it's lower performing APUs. I have been the biggest AMD fanboy since I was 10 and built my first computer, they have had their ups and downs, but now I have completely lost faith in them for not releasing and Steamroller FX chip. So now I am here asking for advice on an Intel build. I would like to have a system that I can overclock but the whole cruddy thermal compound under the Intel Ivy and Haswell chips is probably the reason why I put off switching for so long and the whole delidding process scares me a bit. So do you guys have any suggestions?

I am also under the impression that maybe they will remake the 9590 intoa FX97XX chip - because there can still be some improvements in the chip - but thats just me being hopeful

But i would just wait for later in the year before you jump ship just to see what the specs of the excavator is going to be like

I was at 4.7ghz on a 4670k without delid. They dnt all need it if u have a great cooler. I did it cause i wanted to see what i could gain. So i delited to run 4.8 in tbe end it only affects benchmarks.

I think my 4670k is impressive converting with handbrake however You should get 4770k since you convert so much media.

I highly doubt they will, sadly I think they flat out abandoned traditional desktop CPUs for their APUs. Unless they release and 8 core 6 core APU that blows my 1055t out of the water, I am going to have to go with Intel.

I was thinking maybe going for the higher end with a i7-4820k, but it seems that the whole thermal paste thing isn't as bad as I thought. What is the main difference between the 4670k and and 4770k, they are clocked nearly the same but the i5 doesn't have Hyper Threading. Does it really make that big a difference?

well since you are using it to encode and play games, the i7 is ideally what you are wanting. Faster encoding than the i5 for sure. Heres a comparision that TPU has done, its not the greatest but will give you an overall idea of the difference between i5/i7

it doesnt make a huge difference. Matter of fact its not much at all in gaming. you said you encode a lot of video. The 4770k will beat the 4670k at encoding even if the 4670k is overclocked more. So Hyperthreading has a very big impact on encoding.

I only use convertxtodvd occasionally and my 4670k can encode 3 BD rips (6gb each) into as single dvd folder in about 13 mins. I mean I know 4770k might do it in 8-9 mins. Since i only burn a disc or two a month its fine for me.

Um, I would find another device to run as a server and encode on the fly while also streaming to your other computers. That doesn't seem like the best solution you have going on.

For gaming, yes go with Intel. The difference will be night and day in quite a few titles and you will not really need to upgrading for a few year atleast.
