Looking to update...

Thread Starter
So, I'm looking to update my laptop. Currently, I have an Asus g74sx with an SSD I added in for boot times on windows 7. I'd like to replace my laptop with a more powerful one. I'm open to suggestions, and one of my main questions is would an 870m or 770m be better? As far as I understand, the 8xx mobile series is a refresh mostly correct me if I'm wrong.

What is your maximum budget? Around 2000 +/- a few hundred, given a deal or something.

What country are you in? USA

What will be the uses of this laptop? Primary usage will be for gaming, but will be used for school etc.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? I currently really love my g74. MSI seems a little too flashy too me, but I know/am pretty sure I can turn the keyboard one color right?

What screen size do you require? Either 15, or 17. Below 15 is too small, and 18 is overkill.

What screen resolution do you require? 1080p preference.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? New would be ok because of the warranty. I'd consider refurbished or re-certified if it has a great warranty deal behind it.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) Well, on average my labs will run around 4 hours. But, I'd have access to a charger for those if really needed. A few hours would be nice at least.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? I play a little bit of everything. Skyrim, Starcraft, Sins of a Solar Empire, Batman series. No game has a preference as I like a little bit of everything, and would like to get at least high settings this time.

What operating system do you need? (if any) I'd like it to be 7 if possible, but I understand 8 is what is (mostly) available.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) No major preference. Plain, but powerful.

How much hard drive space do you need? SSD is a must. I love having one, at the very least for the OS. And I'd like least 500GB on the side from a regular hard drive. Does 5400/7200 make that much of a difference?

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) No, not really. I have a PS4 for blue ray, I don't really skype. I have my own gaming mouse and headset. As long as it's got a few usb ports really that's fine.

Is there anything else we need to know? Not that I'm aware of? I'm not against MSI, just seem ehhh. I guess it's also worth mentioning if possible I'd like any links to be through amazon as I intend to purchase it there. If really needed, it can be else where but only for a really good deal. My amazon card has zero balance and is in your hands thumb.gif

You may want to wait until these are released to see if they're to your liking: http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/asus_republic_of_gamers_g750_gaming_notebooks.html smile.gif

870m should be faster than the 770m. And yeah, the 8xx series is mostly just a refresh of existing Kepler parts as currently only one Maxwell GPU has been released so far (GM 107 found in desktop GTX 750 & 750 Ti).

Since NVIDIA just released their 8xx series, I would wait a few weeks before purchasing a new laptop. Major manufacturers are going to release new/refreshed gaming laptops soon:

Also, 7200 vs 5400 makes a difference. High areal density 5400 RPM drives are okay (1 TB), but a 7200 will (on average) always have faster access times.

The 850m and 860m are maxwell the 870m and 880m are kepler but higher clocks and ram. The 870 will perform on par if not better than the 780. The maxwell chips look to be awesome if I did not need a new laptop now I would wait until the true maxwell mobile gpu's get released.

Sorry, I'm not sure I follow. Why would the 870 be better then the 880, or on par? Did I miss something in general terms of performance?

Right now, the Asus ROG G750JS (i7, 16gb ram, 1tb 7200rpm hdd, 256 ssd, 870m). It'll be released in a few weeks times, but that's ok. Or, there are MSI ones ready to go as well. Is there much of a difference between the two models? I know the Asus uses a duel fan system. As far as I'm aware, the MSI bodies use a single fan cooling system.

Thank you for the replies so far smile.gif

I think he meant it will be better than the gtx 780m. With how Asus's customer support has been recently i would avoid their products because if you need help they likely won't provide it.

Which MSI are you looking at that you think only has 1 fan?

As far as I'm aware, that would have been the previous models of the G-ling up from MSI. I saw very few comments about getting pretty hot due to the some what less great cooling system.

Right now, I'm looking at the MSI GT70 Dominator-893. Pretty much directly similar to the Asus I listed in an above post. I'm wandering over to their main website now to see if I can learn some more about it. But as it stands, it looks like it's a tie between those two since I can purchase them on Amazon.

Upon further review, I am certain the msi uses a single fan but a bridge type cooling system.
http://dragonarmy.msi.com/home/weapons/GT70-2PC-Dominator, it's explained more here.
It cools on one side, but when that bridge gets hot it shifts to the other one.

That is correct I meant 780m, Fixed.

Ok. Is there any major difference between the MSI that I mentioned or the Asus? They are roughly the same so is there a clear winner between the two? I have sold my current G74 and am ready to buy something. Or perhaps did I miss a model/brand that might be better than both?
