Any reason you're not using ethernet?

That being said, I want your internet. Gigabit. mmmm.

I can't speak for either router personally, I have the N66U and it's going through several walls/floors to get to my office and I'm doing fine performance wise. But definitely go ethernet when possible.

You have GIGABIT Internet speed? Really?

If the 802.11g won't penetrate the walls, the 802.11ac won't either. You're probably going to need to run physical Ethernet wiring to that part of the building and set up a Wi-Fi repeater.

Ideally, your PC shouldn't be Wi-Fi at all. Hard-wire for the win. Unless you live in the country with neighbors that are at least 300 yards from your house, you're going to have channel contention and signal issues with neighbors. If 2.4 GHz gets blocked by walls, 5 GHz is going to be blocked worse.

I'm really happy with my RT-68U but we have wooden floors and drywall, so Wi-Fi penetration isn't a big deal.

You'll probably get a bit more gain from the 68U out of the box. Depending on the house it would be a better idea to install a few access points that tie into a centralized location via wired network drops.

Also, your internet speed is not magically your local NIC negotiated speed.

Edit: Added AP clause.

i own the ac56u
they are both identical minus 2X2 in the 56 and 3X3 in the 68U
I dont believe 68U has better range (you can double check on SNB forums)...but it does give you is increased wireless throughput.

I would use wired connection cat5e/6 to take advantage of that connection anyways...so 56U is the same as 68U in this regard...save yourself $80
