Sapphire HD7870 (2) Crossfire - Watercooled, high temps very low fps, help please!

Hey guys,

I've got a little problem, I'll try to explain it thoroughly.

Last weekend I provided my rig with some custom watercooling parts, but upon restarting it looking at temps something strange happened.

I started Metro and Tomb Raider for some temp/fps readings and here is the problem.

Crossfire enabled with 14.2 beta drivers (clean install)
=> temp gpu1 went from 29°C to 100/104°C with 100% load ingame, fps was around 15fps
=> gpu2 didn't seem to do anything frown.gif
=> settings where high on 1440p (On air I got high fps)
=> lowered to 1080p, same amount of fps between 15-20fps

=> Same problem with Metro and Battlefield 4 (though Battlefield 4 ran a bit better)
I did have a crash 10 minutes in game.

Next test I did, was with gpu 1, crossfire disabled, same temp spike and even lower fps.
Tried out gpu2 seperatly and it works but same low fps and high temp.

=> Clean windows 8.1 install, clean 14.2 beta instal
Ran Furmark and temps would go to 104°C but would come back down to 52°C and remained there. GPU 2 didn't do anything 0% even though Crossfire was enabled.
Same low fps problem ingame though.

=> removed 14.2 beta drivers and installed 13.12 drivers.
Temps back to 100/104°C and same extreme low fps, crash after around 10minutes.

Upon feeling the waterblock they are not warm,

I checked bios, pci 3.0 enabled and both cards stand at 8x

I got recommanded to drain my loop and reseat the gpu blocks, but first test them on air.
Has anyone here got another solution before I do this?

Specs:

2x HD7870's from Sapphire
i5 3570k
Corsair AW750
Asus Sabertooth z77
Asus essence stx soundcard

1x 360 rad
1x 200 rad

D5 pump
EK waterblock for gpu and cpu

Nothing overclocked!

Are your GPU blocks setup in parallel or serial? If parallel, what setting is your pump on or is it PWM? Are you sure you put thermal paste and thermal pads properly on your GPU blocks?

It's parallel, pump is on setting 4, I believe it's around 4500 rpm.

I assume so, I put a little paste under the thermal pads so they sticked better.
Someone also suggested that I might have misplaced the thicker pads that you get from EK and that could be the problem.

I'll just take my blocks of tonight, I'm just a little afraid that the problem will persist. I can't imagine I did something wrong when placing the blocks.

thx for the reply!

I'm not a fan of parallel, Ive seen this before where dead spots form in the water flow with blocks setup in parallel. I think you might have better luck with serial. You shouldn't have a problem pushing water through a serial loop with a D5 pump. I would probably try that first before taking your blocks off, especially if you said your pretty sure you have them pasted right.
