Advice please for HTPC build

Hello,

I have a 32" Philips 1080p 3D TV and a want to build a HTPC to go with it. I also only have a laptop, so I would like the HTPC to be like a mini-desktop PC. My budget is around 1000 euros.

I mainly want to use it for watching movies, TV-series, Blu rays, playing single player games and MMOs and I also do photo-editing.

I hope that's enough info...thanks for any advice you can give me. smile.gif

Is the TV going to be the monitor for all the things you say? If so, it's really not ideal for photo editing because of the lack of good color control (TV's tend to be over saturated and won't give you particularly good results as you edit). Game playing means that you will also need to move away from a low power, low memory, HTPC build towards a more typical computer build. You will need a separate graphics card, 8GB of RAM, and probably a minimum of a 500W PSU. For just HTPC you only need graphics off the CPU, 4GB memory and a nice 350W PSU. If you are looking at an Intel build, there are lots of threads over on the Intel forum site that discuss various components.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realise that HTPCs were not really designed for games so much and yes, the TV was going to be the main monitor for everything. I will check out the Intel builds you suggested.

I also forgot to mention that with gaming you need to be more focused on CPU and unit cooling as well. My HTPC only uses the Intel stock CPU cooler and is passively cooled in the case with no case fans. It runs just fine. You couldn't do this with a gaming PC. You are probably looking at double the cost of parts for a gaming PC vs HTPC.

OK, thanks for that. I've been doing more research and have found the same, so I will have a rethink about what I'm going to do. Probably forget my TV and just go for a full out new desktop build with a proper monitor.

Thanks also for those links with the details of the builds...very helpful smile.gif
