Another OFFSET mode question (still don't get it (to work)

I've read a lot about it, finally starting to understand it, but when I do it either te temps go skyhigh or it crashes etc...

So here is a picture of my 24h stable overclock of 4.6GHz on 1.395V

I did reach 5.2 once, but it was just a crazy suicide test to get the CPU-Z validation shot wink.gif It was also before I even heard of the OFFSET MODE.

So with these numbers, what must I do in BIOS???

I figured my CPU can get to 5.2, it is 4.6 stable so there must be a section between 4.6 and 5.2 I must get now... Or at least when not getting higher as 4.6GHz I might do it with lower voltages than 1.395V...

The secret is to find the difference between the idle voltage and your VID for this current multiplier which is 1.3861 - 1.3911V (each multiplier has its own VID), and use that as your Offset, rounded up or down by an increment of 0.005V.

 

So, I see that your idle voltage is 1.400V. That's a difference of +0.0089V and +0.0139V. Therefore, you would try two different positive offsets: +0.010V and +0.015V. The goal is to achieve the same full-load voltage that you get with the Manual or Fixed voltage.

 

Also, here's a tip: you can safely enable C3 and C6 if you use a Load-Line Calibration of Medium or High (but not Ultra high or Extreme). I'm using Medium. This will give you a lower idle power consumption, reduced by about 15W.

Well I finally figured that out it has to be something like that... But what do you mean by that? Because when in Idle it's 1.4V in cpu-z (and I set it at 1.395V in bios) but when stressed it is aprox 1.38V in cpu-z (when still 1.395V set in bios) --> Does that mean I have to "find" the offset voltage between the CPU-Z 1.376V and the VID of 1.3861V (which is = -0.01V) and 1.384V and 1.3911 (which is = -0.01V)?

Man... I hate this tongue.gif seems like I get stuck in my own calculations... --> I get it when it's idle. You have the CPU-Z volt and you have the VID. Subtract those 2 and see if you need to add or substract voltage --> which will be the offset.

But when stressed, there are more than 1 (2 in this case) voltage fluctuations so I can calculate both, but in the end I don't know which one to choose/set? (Tho these are both 0.01V in this case...)

It's been a while when I tried it again, but I remember something as VERY high voltage and temps when I did it... smile.gif


As for LLC I have to reboot and see in BIOS... but I do remember some settings I set to Ultra or Very High... prolly those rolleyes.gif

So a quick reboot (LLC was Very High, forgot to look at C states tongue.gif) to set +0.01V offset.

Seems like the idle voltage drops a lot, but when stressed it is exactly the same 1.384V in CPU-Z and the same 1.3911V VID...


Wasn't it the meaning to lower the offset voltage? (so I can go higher clocks again biggrin.gif)

You're over-complicating it, my friend. I explained everything. There's nothing more to it than that. There really isn't. There aren't any calculations that I left out.

The offset is simply this: it is adding to or subtracting from the VID of the current multiplier. Again, every multiplier has its own VID. The multiplier at idle is extremely low and so is the VID.

 

So, no, the VID isn't going to change unless you change the multiplier.

 

I don't know what you're asking, but it sounds to me like we nailed it: the offset of +0.010V is adding exactly what is needed so that your full-load voltage is exactly the same as it was when you were using a Manual voltage.

If you keep using Ultra High, then having C3 and C6 enabled with an Offset voltage will run a high risk of having stability problems while idling. Disabling C3 and C6 fixes this, but at a cost of 15W while idling: you add about 15W to the idle power consumption by disabling these 2. So, the way I see it, why not use Medium instead so that you can keep C3 and C6 enabled and keep the lower idle power consumption? However, before you switch to Medium, switch back to a Manual voltage and calculate the difference between your idle voltage (with the Medium LLC) and the VID of your overclock multiplier. Remember what I said?

Hmmm, all is clear now.... But I tought I did these steps before (few months ago) but it failed???

Prolly my fault tho as I was not so sober back then tongue.gif

OK so I (we) figured it out!

And why was I always thinking that with Offset mode I could get the Full Load voltage to be lower??? Thus more headromm to go higher voltage again with even more higher overclocks???

So excualy when I set it manualy or with offset gives me the same overclock result??? It just decreases power consumption when Idle?

Hmmm... I want to go higher OC tongue.gif (can't get stable anything higher than 4.6GHz without crazy temps...) --> just for the numbers cause performance wise you won't notice a thing (unless benchmarking)


Will see what I do with LLC and C states... (But not now as I just booted the PC and too lazy to reboot for a while, also just awake redface.gif)

It was probably the alcohol talking. :) "Hey man! If you use an Offset, then guess what! You could end up using a much lower core voltage! Yeah!" hehehe

 

The thing with Offset is, it's nothing really all that fancy or special. It's just that you can get a much, much, much lower idle voltage due to how the Offset setting works: it's always adding or subtracting a set amount to or from the current multiplier's VID. As I said, each multiplier has its own VID.

Disable Hyper Threading to get lower temps. Or, do you need it enabled? Some people do and some people don't.

I'm not sure what you said there, but this is how I say it (not always, but it is today):

 

The Offset is always adding to or subtracting from the current multiplier's VID. So, if you have an Offset of let's say +0.010V, then it will always add that much voltage to the current multiplier's VID which results in the core voltage - before vDroop. That's why you have to find the difference between the VID and the idle voltage, and not the full-load voltage. As we saw, we nailed it with +0.010V because that gave you the very same core voltage under full load that you were seeing with the Manual voltage. The reason why this was the goal is simple: if that full-load voltage was the lowest necessary voltage for stability, then you would have had instability with a lower core voltage under full-load, regardless if you're using Offset or Manual.
