Well, most games support multi GPU. AMD issues seemed to mainly be stuttering, recently. Past generations have been a nightmare, AFAIK, but Fermi drivers sucked pretty badly.
I beat you to it. smile.gif

Historically, dual GPU cards have been less than purchasing two of the single-GPU variations... Then again, this continuum shifted with the introduction of the GTX 600 series and the HD 7000 Series a couple years ago...

It kept 2 Tahiti Pro under 80°C while staying the same noise as GTX TITAN

Theory: If AMD neutered compute on the R9 290X and made a R9 290LE with 2816 shaders, 1/24 floating point 64 performance like their small dies like Nvidia did with GK110 they'd have less nitpicking on power (by gamers and miners).

They're pushing 50% less floating point 64 bit compared to Tahiti (on top of the additional power states) and that's why they can eek out more with Hawaii than Tahiti.

GTX 780 Ti Gaming:

R9 290X Gaming:

You're missing a key part of the equation though. Fan speed. Both gaming models have the same TF4 cooler, but the 290X has to run much faster, and thus louder, to keep its temps in the same range as the Ti:

From those same TPU reviews
780 Ti Gaming (Click to show)

290X Gaming (Click to show)

41dbA vs 30dbA is a huuuuuge difference. If the 290X were run at the Ti's fan speeds the gap would widen again.

I thought it was widely known that ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI acted hastily or lazily with respect to Hawaii:
the coolers were all copy-pastes from a bigger die GK110.

The R9 290X MSI Lightning (with the hugely delayed launch) and Sapphire / Powercolor (and presumably Club3D RoyalAce) designs are the ones worth looking at. It's no coincidence that AMD-only brands have better coolers for Hawaii.

XFX redid their cooler for the R9 series so they actually don't throttle anymore, it's just that the light up logo has an idiotic placement and the plate heatsink is partly plastic (doh.gif).

HIS was pretty lazy too, all they did was take the r9 280X cooler which they copied off the HD 7970 IceQ X2 and then sliced off the diamond shim.

AFAIK even the ASUS ROG Matrix R9 290X Platinum is going to share the cooler with the ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 780 Ti Platinum

edit: also I don't expect this to be less than $1,000

I do not get the hate for 95c target temperature. If you dig around, TSMC claims in their documentation for 28nm Bulk that the process doesn't degrade until 125c, much higher than Intel or GloFo's processes.

Microstutter shouldn't be a problem with Hawaii GPUs. Remember, AMD paid the price for not properly tackling microstutter last year. They fixed it in software in GCN 1.0 based cards, like Tahiti 7970/7950/280/280x, and then added a hardware fix in GCN 1.1, like Hawaii.

However with Mantle, you don't even need AFR, so we will hopefully get lucky and see something better than Ad-lefield 4 thousand bugs push something cool with Mantle and multi-GPU.

For the cooler, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a three slot cooler. In the end it would be a plus, 2 290x cards would take up 4 slots and a three slot Hawaii dual GPU card would take up one less. Which is a lot of why people buy these dual GPU cards, right? To save space? I've never been big on them personally, having two cards just looks cooler.

Invested $800 in two 6970s back in 2012 and there was just so many issues with CF. Every game releases, I had to wait 2 months for the updated drivers and alot of old games still don't work in CF.

CF is amazing when it works but most of the time it doesn't work properly.

I just stick to one card and upgrade it every two years.

If they really want to make a total killing on this card they need to release it at $800, it would sell unbelievably fast anywhere below $950.

If AMD only invests in mining they're going to be hurting when Big Maxwell (GM200 / GM204 / GM206) hits in 2H 2014. GTX 750 Ti already has close to 2x performance per watt , it just doesn't have the compute density per card (i.e. per PCIE slot)
