For 2-3 years, sure that was when you were buying new but by the time the E8400 hit 3 years old it was being matched or beaten by the Q6600. It didn't make sense to buy a Q6600 new then but if you only wanted to upgrade your CPU and motherboard every 5+ years then the Q6600 was a great option and still games well....35fps? Not even close, I was getting that in BF3 MP on a stock E6700. You vastly overestimate how much faster hardware has gotten/how much more speed games need if you truly think that...Give someone an 8 core i7 with a GPU upgrade 3-4 years down the line and give someone else an 6 core one with the same GPU upgrade (And an upgrade to a newer, faster Octocore) and watch the systems be around equal in performance despite the former costing a heck of a lot less because CPUs are already vastly over-powered and under-utilized for gaming specific workloads. If you're upgrading your CPU every 2-3 years then 1) You're most likely doing it needlessly or 2) are putting tonnes of cash into your PC and don't care either way or 3) One of the few people who is CPU limited at 120hz/4k/whatever and not likely to see much of a benefit from having an Octocore right now anyway. Some of us prefer to buy big on CPU power now and only upgrade when we have to.

But in games there is also the poor optimization, we should encourage for better optimization than for more raw power and poor optimization tbh, because in this way we will never be satisfied with the core count.

I'm in for X99 build. Although I don't need it for anything, I have mostly been gaming older games in the last few months. It's just cool to have new hardware every now and then. Lol right now I am playing Grim Fandango and Thief III Deadly Shadows.

I am curious if a Rampage V Extreme will be released. No Shamino's knowledge anymore. But he didn't work at Asus when RE or R2E were released, so...

Without reading the thread, am I the only one who thinks this is likely misinformed? Seems very soon. I wasn't expecting it till next year in all honestly. biggrin.gif


The thought of 8 cores and low voltage 3000mhz dimms does heighten my interest, mind tongue.gif In terms of overclocking though, Ivy-E is hampered enough. I can just about muster 4.8 with 125 strap on my 4960x. I can't imagine Haswell-E is going to escape the shrink trend.

But consoles have 1.6Ghz AMD cores, which is the equivalent of 8 1Ghz Haswells or worse.

They're even weaker than that.

Ps4 and Xbox one allocates only 6 cores for game use and keeps the remaining 2 cores to OS... Not exactly a console efficiency, is it?


But, let's just say we can use all 8 Jaguars.

The total sum power of all 8 cores combined would only muster up to be equal to a i3 dual core part, seriously.

Our hexacores are literally 24 Jaguars combined, and then some more, absolutely no need to worry about this.
