Benefits of using PWM fans with fan controller?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Does it matter at all whether the fans are PWM or standard 3-pin, if I'm using a fan controller to manually adjust speeds on the go? From my understanding, PWM fans respond more linearly to undervolting and PWM fan curves, but would they still be worth the extra cost if I'm using a fan controller?

If your fan controller does not support PWM, save some money and get regular fans. Also some fan controllers say they support PWM, but really don't...biggrin.gif

The correct fans should be used with the correct type of controller. The Swiftech rep on here has said that using Voltage control on PWM devices can potentially do damage to them.
It is unlikely to be true that PWM devices respond to voltage control better than devices designed for it. A lot of PWM devices, including fans, actually have a narrower working voltage range than their conventional counterparts so in fact they would provide less control.

If you compare the start voltages of these Noiseblocker fans;

The PWM versions at the bottom will only go down to 6V before they stop vs a little over 3V for the conventional versions.

Thanks for the replies! That does make sense. I always used PWM fans with the PWM motherboard headers on ASUS boards, and they had fantastic control. Now I'm using an NZXT Sentey Mix 2 fan controller, which is "PWM Compatible" meaning that the connectors are PWM sized, not necessarily PWM control. So I reckon it's better to stick with conventional 3-pin huh? I'm talking about the Phanteks PH-F140SP fans btw.

You could always go with the Swiftech PWM splitter that has been very popular on a lot of detailed builds like Seanimus'. Using that in conjunction with the Aquaero 5 LT is what I will be planning on using with the update to my current build.
