Hand me down HTPC

Plan on making a HTPC (steam machine) for living room and ditching the PS3. The only thing it does for me now is play Netflix since I converted to PC gaming.

Kids will game stuff like Skyrim, Lego games, Rocksmith, maybe even Titanfall. No desire to run games like Metro or Crysis for them. Also need it to take the place of my PS3 netflix / hulu machine. Would also allow me to stream basketball games online smile.gif

Most of the parts are going to be hand me downs from the computer I am currently typing on. The only item I have not added would be a second HDD, but it may not be necessary.
Gaming will be done on a basic Samsung LED 42".

Thoughts about these parts for my build. Is the EVGA 770 overkill? Could I get away with less? 750ti? 760? I want to slightly future proof but HTPC won't see any special TV/monitor setups.

I am planning on building a second gaming rig(mine not the kids). Would I be better of keeping my 3570K and putting in a different CPU for the above build? Would the 4670K or 4770K be an upgrade for gaming over the 3570K (microcenter pricing)? I know the I7 would be overkill but at the MC pricing what the hell if I could ever see the benefit.

Thanks in advance for the help.

if you're going to be doing 1080p gaming on a pretty big screen, an i7 and a 770 will not be overkill.

i7 + 770 are definately overkill for 1080p, even more overkill since since you don't plan on running demanding games.
It will be much more future proof though than the logical htpc card that is 750Ti and also gives you an excuse to upgrade your main rig.
The 760 option does not make much sense to me since its performance is close to the 770, if you want the power just throw the 770 in there.

The 3570k in the link is what I'll be using for 1080p gaming on a television.
The i7 is what I'll be using in a separate rig for me. Planning on 1440p gaming with that one.
