[RT] ASUS Introduces the Essence STX II and Essence STX II 7.1 Sound Cards - Page 5

Christ I hate PCI-E 1x. It's totally insufficient to support a card this size. For stubby little USB controllers, half height NICs etc, sure. But for deep, long sound cards with the added weight of EMI shielding it's a joke.

Since many users end up putting these cards into physical 16x slots, I'd like them to leave a dummy 16x PCB extension on the card (snap off for 1x slots), then the card can be well secured for those users at least.

This in turn produced, in my opinion, a better sounding card than the STX given the same opamp upgrades.

The ST (PCI) version of the Essence didn't measure quite as well as the STX (PCI Express) version, but both still offer very impressive sets of measurements for a product that is a) affordably priced and b) must be housed in the hostile RF environment of a personal computer

As for these new versions of the STX and the 7.1 gimmick it seems Asus offers nothing new with the STX II lineup. The previous generation could power 600Ohm headphones with ease and I can attest to it as I am listening to a STX with my Beyerdynamic T1 (600Ohm).

MacG32 says he has a STX card I don't know why he's drooling over the STX II since the exterior looks exactly the same as the vanilla board, including the daughter board. And no I'm not trolling, it's a simple straightforward comment.

You need new glasses, then. The exterior does NOT look exactly the same as the "vanilla" board and the original STX never had a daughter board. One glaring difference is the ribbon cable connector the STX II has on the end. And I doubt MacG32 was referring to just physical looks. As one person corrected me on, some of the chips are different, for starters.

I agree you were not trolling. Don't think that was a complement, however.

Looks don't matter. Measurements and ability to drive higher-impendance headphones such as 300Ohm (typical) and 600Ohm matter more. Besides when it is inside your PC case are you going to be looking at it considering that the monitor is the focal point.

I don't know of anyone. But I have seen a few guides, and it doesn't look that complicated.

For some people, looks do matter. Why do you think so many computer cases have windows in them? It's all a matter of personal taste, Personally, I don't worry about looks nearly as much as I do performance although, performance being pretty much equal, I do like to keep my components color coordinated when possible (all my fans are black with white blades, for example) and my cables neat (one reason I made most of mine and hid them as much as possible). I don't like side panel windows, however; they are pointless unless the inside is illuminated and I don't like the glare from an illuminated case. The plastic pretty much all of them use gets dirty and scratched up pretty quickly.

All of this is moot anyway since I was referring to barcode71's inability to see that there was a difference and that the poster he was deriding probably wasn't referring to just looks.

Buy Creative's ZxR now or wait for this new iteration of the STX? I'm in a dilemma right now...

ASUS claims that these are the world's first consumer sound card to deliver 124 db SNR audio clarity plus 600 ohm headphone amp.

What? Are they high? Creative launched to market the ZxR at least a year ago with these.....
