The good news is that I still have the HD 7870 XT crossfire setup in my wife's system. I can still test it, but I doubt that will happen tonight... she likes her setup a lot. thumb.gif

My test was done on a single 2gb 770 @ 200% scaling. I have'n't tried it on SLI yet, so i'll do that shortly... thumb.gif. I was wondering what FPS you got. I want to see if though your GPU had enough V-ram, did it run at low FPS?

Let's clarify:

HD 7870 XT Crossfire: At 100% scaling, I could run ultra preset @ 1920x1200 and get an average of 80-100 FPS on virtually every full server I played. The framerates at those settings were phenomenally good for the price I paid for each card. At 200% I'll have to check, though the framerate was secondary to the amount of stuttering I remember.

GTX 780: 100% scaling averages about 75 FPS @ 1920x1200. Framerate is very smooth at that setting.

For 200% scaling, the framerate was consistent, but it was not what I would consider playable. The average was at or below 30 FPS, which for me, is just too sluggish. I have a feeling that dual GTX 780's could do 200% scaling without issue. I definitely still had plenty of vram left over even @ 200% scaling.

I got my sister to video my gameplay, and her video skills are not the best, so i had to always look over and make sure she was doing it right lol. I apologize in advance. thumb.gif

I did my testing at native 1080p resolution, 200% scaling, and 160% scaling with everything maxed out. My 770 SLI was at 1398Mhz (just in-case you can't really see it from the video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc3rbpqk0g4

What i noticed was:

1.) At 200%, my fps ranged from 24-59.
2.) At 200%, the game was choppy when FPS was within 24-45.
3.) At 160%, FPS was between 60-85
4.) At 160%, the gameplay was very smooth

I do not think the choppiness @ 200% was due to lack of V-ram considering how low the FPS was. You stated that your 2gb 7870XT X-fire could not handle anything more than 115%, but my 2gb 770 SLI plays smoothly at 160% (Maybe because i am able to maintain 60 FPS+ at that setting).

My point is... My 770 SLI @ 1398Mhz is MUCH MORE POWERFUL than your 7870XT X-fire, and that could be the reason why your 7870XT's couldn't do anything higher than 115% without choppy gameplay. If my findings are right, i would say your 7870's either ran out of processing power rather than V-ram, or the game itself does not work properly when making use of the resolution scaling option and multi GPU setups.

My conclusion is not factual though... I'm just basing that on the general performance difference between your 7870XT's and my 770's, and the fact that they're both dual GPU setups. Also note that V-ram allocation on my GPU's did not change as i changed from 200% to 160%. It was still capped at 2000Mb+.

In general, I certainly don't think there's a need for more than 2GB of V-RAM, for the average person. Multi-monitor, extra-high res and game mods are some of those special things that will benefit from the excess memory, but there really is no need for that. I will enjoy the 4GB on my GTX 770 for that, but I'm not expecting more in the way of FPS out of it.

With memory, you only need a certain amount. The speed at which the data can travel in and out of the memory is the bigger factor in frame rate performance. You want enough memory bandwidth to move the full 4GB as fast as it would 2GB. This is a big part of why...

4GB GTX 760 < 2GB GTX 770 = 4GB GTX 770 < 3GB GTX 780

...as far as general FPS.

Sorry for skipping the whole thread, I just read the 1st post and wonder did OP do any test with a heavily modded Skyrim? I know modded games tend to be badly optimized, inefficient in hardware usage but everybody does it anway. I've heard rumors about Skyrim eating up more than 2G, or even 2.5G Vram @1080p. Just curious.
//Btw, been playing around with modded Skyrim for a long long time and from my experiences, Skyrim with Beth's tex pack slays my 1.5G Vram @1080p, no sweat.

There is another texture pack that is double the resolution of Bethesda's official HD pack. Combne with a reasonable list of mods that add new textures... 2.5-2.75GB is a normal usage. That being said, I probably don't need all of that cached. What is needed and what is not is another issue with determining how much VRAM we need. I may only need 2GB cached, or even just 1.75GB. It's just easier if the card can collect all that it needs, and doesn't cache any more later.

Am I seriously the only one who thinks its odd he NEVER goes over his 2gb vram even in times he should and that it just sits under 2gb the whole time, regardless of settings?

is it an nvidia/amd thing? drivers?
do nvida cards handle vram better so they are less likely to get stuttering when things are being moves on/off vram?
some type of config that makes it so your vram wont go over? I know there was stuff like that for skyrim but it seems overall for you.

how can a single 770 with 2gb not go over vram in a game but a 7870XT with 2gb will go over if you give it the chance.

Yung, I want you to try to give yourself vram stuttering, I wanna see IF your card will let you past the 2gb if you push it.
I just find it very odd that it pretty much caps itself at 2020 out of 2048mb and will bounce just under 2gb.

can others with a 770 confirm confirm they can't go over 2gb either if they push it?

@Sadmoto

thinking.gif When you say your 7870XT goes over 2gb, does your 2gb 7870XT actually show more than 2000Mb allocated v-ram usage on any application like MSI AB OSD, GPU-Z, EVGA PX e.t.c ? If it does, can you take a screenshot showing that your V-ram usage is above 2000Mb? And can you also take a GPU-z screenshot showing all the stock details about your GPU?
