and not a GPUZ/AB meter showing vram usage to bee seen anywhere.

Hahaha, that made me laugh. Every Benchmark i have posed has an AB OSD showing what clocks the GPU is running at, the allocated V-ram, and what not, did you miss that? tongue.gif. I know it's a hard fact to believe that 2gb can handle such a high resolution, but what you see is what you get. This is not rocket science...

NOTE: GPU-Z / Afterburner only shows the allocated V-ram usage, that why all the games show 2020-2046Mb. Basically the same Allocated V-ram usage once you go above 1440p

Didn't see the OSD, my bad on that, but still some of these posts in these threads I wouldn't consider being reliable info. that's all I'm saying.

2gb is fine for higher resolutions then 1080p, depending on what your doing and what your settings are.

I mean... If you guys can prove otherwise, i'll be glad to take note. This is supposed to be a learning experience for me also. wink.gif. I have not seen ANY proof what-so-ever from the other team, so i wonder why this mis-information got so blown up.

Nvidia is definitely not stupid, they know exactly why they put 2gb of V-ram on their GK 104 cards. I mean... What company that wants to be on top limits their own product? rolleyes.gif. Especially when they had the option for a refresh 7xx series, they still kept with the 2gb V-ram on the 680, and put it on the 770. If they honestly knew that 2gb wouldn't be enough, they would have bumped it up to 3gb or more.

I used to play games on gaming laptops before i built my first rig, and there were lots of mobile GPU's that had 3gb of V-ram like the GTX 555m. These GPU's had more v-ram than a GTX 770, but only got about 1700 graphics score in 3Dmark11. Wonder why? People forget that these companies are here for the money! They notice that people are crazed on the V-ram topic, so they design GPU's with unnecessary amounts of V-ram just to get those misinformed people to buy it.

Misinformation is the best way to sell IMO. "OMG, the new Dell gaming laptop was just released, and the mobile GPU has 6gb of V-RAM! I want it! (O_O)" ........ That's what exactly these companies want to hear (-__-)"

First vram is tied to the bus. So with 256 bus you cant get 3gb vram only 2 gb or 4 (660ti did this with the 3gb version and they had some performance problems).
Second gk104 isnt a gpgpu card. With gpgpu apps you need a lot of vram (titan has 6gb but 780ti has only 3gb)
I think you are correct with your claims but your test methology is a bit off. You cant use downsample and then claim that 4k res vram usage is that number. Downsample is a form of AA (OGSSAA : Ordered Grid SuperSampling AntiAliasing) that renders the game internal resolution higher than your monitor and then rescale it back to your monitor's native res. So the vram usage can be either higher or lower vs using a native 4k monitor

Laptops always had a lot of vram. Its a marketing gimmick. Also entry level cards like 630 have 2gb vram

I don't think that 2GB is enough today, because I've often gone just over 2GB vram usage in BF4, on Ultra/4xMSAA (according to Afterburner).

Never more than 2100, though, unless I play w/ Resolution Scale.

It'll take even more when I go 1440p, but it doesn't look like I'll need more than 3GB.

You have to take into account memory allocation though. Just because you are using over 2GB with a 3GB card doesn't mean you need 2GB for the game to run fluidly.

The game will always try and use as much memory as it can, sometimes unnecessarily.

I know what downsampling is. You can't just SAY downsampling does not use V-ram the way a native resolution would use it. You have to PROVE it with actual tests from your computer. I proved mine that downsmple works exactly like using a native resolution in my previous post, and my test was an accurate scenario of downsample vs native resolution.

I can't take what you're "saying" as a fact unless you prove it. Hear-say is the fastest way to get someone else misinformed, that's why it's not used in the court of law thumb.gif

If you check your ss you lower the quality and you still get the same vram usage. More vram the game load more textures faster. That results either on better minimums ,less stutter or in general the game load textures faster with 3gb buffer vs a 2gb buffer. You will never gonna run out of vram the game will just create 2gb buffer instead of 3 or 2,5

Downsample is not the same as running the native resolution. It may cost more than running the native resolution because its a form of AA

Downsample is not the same as running the native resolution. It may cost more than running the native resolution because its a form of AA

1.) Thats memory allocation. I see you don't still understand what to "allocate" means...

BF4 @ 200% Scaling
2000Mb (Click to show)

BF3 @ 2880x1620p = 4.6MP
2000Mb (Click to show)

Crysis 3 @ 3100x1744p = 5.4MP
2000mb (Click to show)

Crysis 3 @ 2880x1620p = 4.6MP
2000mb (Click to show)

Even at different resolutions, and different games, they all still read 2gb Allocated V-ram usage. Almost every game i play is always capped at 2000mb+ at my native 2560x1080p

2.) My test showed the same AVG FPS between Native and Downsampled, so i don't think it's in any way harder to run Downsampled vs Native. You have a system right? You can do the test yourself, or get a 3rd party to try it.
