bencher is saying $600 in a matter of a year or two, not even this year. I honestly don't see why everyone is reacting so gallantly towards his posts. I too am waiting to get a dual-GPU card since mITX only supports one GPU and 1440p @ 120hz is really hard to drive. I doubt I can afford one until after I graduate school so given the time span of 1~2 years, I'm happy to wait for that.

Thanks thumb.gif

You get it.

Honestly, the main point I was trying to drive across with my post is that in the end, prices aren't going to fall that low, that fast. And by the time prices do hit that low, you'll almost always end up having a single die card capable of equal to higher performance than a dual die card.

And the only reason the 7990s went as low as they did, was because:
  1. AMD didn't have the brand recognition to pull an Nvidia ($1K dual GPU price point) at the same time as their competitor (Nvidia).
  2. The whole micro-stutter fiasco (which thankfully has been fixed, mostly) with dual + GPUs.
  3. The product just wasn't selling due to points 1 & 2.

If even at least point 2 hadn't been a problem at the release of the card, AMD would've never slashed the MSRP of their 7990, nor would it have ever gone on Firesale. Because in the end, it would've had the performance/performance characteristics to justify it cost @ $1000 MSRP.

Powercolor's essential firesale of their own 7990 cards only happened around the same time AMD started slashing prices of their reference 7990, which would've given it a year since its release to have its firesale. And only because they EOL'd the card, and it just so happened to run into the problems I outlined in points #1 & 2.

And now you have the 780Ti/290X essentially vying to beat the previous generation dual die GPUs with a small performance deficit compared to the dual die GPUs. Its just easier to go for the single die/card config in the end imo.

Totally valid points and same reason I went with one 7950 vs a dual-GPU 5970 or 6990 (I came from 2x 5870s). Unfortunately, I went from one 1080p to 3x 1080ps and eventually to 1440p 120Hz, so my power needs have changed and a single 7950 (even clocked to 1300/1700) is not enough.

This is why I'm excited for a dual-Hawaii GPU. I would love to get one later down the road, but there's always the option of an even better 20nm GPU, so only time will tell. There is the option to going to bigger boards, but I've already heavily invested in mITX and I would rather stay in this platform cause it's so damn small and cute. biggrin.gif

Me too! I would have been rocking a 7990 or a 290/290X had I known.

Interesting. Hopefully they are using threaded connectors - G1/4 would be ideal but G1/8 would be still better than just non-removable barbs. Although this thing will be way outside my price bracket.

It was about the way the tubes are connected to the card. A "good" way is to use threads, that commonly in water cooling are G 1/4 threaded or less common is G 1/8 and then there is couple even less common sizes. The "bad" way is just molding your barbs as non-removable part of the cooler. If it has threads then you can just throw out the 120 mm rad with fans and put the card straight into your custom loop with proper pump and larger radiator.
