Friend's PC wont post

Thread Starter
Hey guys, a friend of mine was moving, unplugged the pc, was careful with it etc, hooked it all up again but it will not post. All I got was a no signal error on my monitor when i checked it. Checked the GPU by installing into my computer, that worked fine, PSU & RAM also both check out. This leads me to believe that either the CPU or mobo might be toast. I did notice however that his CPU cooler (plastic pins no backing plate) was a bit loose, might it have overheated and fried the CPU?? Any thoughts? Thanks!

(note to mods, I hope this is the correct thread, sorry if it is not)

Well it should have a fail safe and shut the PC down after it passes XYZ temps. Did you test the CPU? Make sure the HSF is on tight enough.

Reseat everything including the CPU, header cables, 24-pin, 8-pin, sata cables. You sure the PSU switch is turned to on position?

Does it receive power (do the fans spin)? if not, check the Case power connections and make sure they're plugged in correctly in the mobo's header.

Try to short the power supply so that you know it's working.

All the fans turn on, the psu runs my other computer just fine. HDD spins up, just no signal to the monitor, yet the GPU works in the other computer. I'll re-seat the CPU cooler again and see if that helps. I'm thinking that the mobo might be dead though.

Try clearing the CMOS mine will do this every once and a while and clearing the CMOS fixes it. Also if it has it try seeing if it will post using onboard graphics.

there is one last thing to try if clearing the CMOS doesn't work try pulling all but 1 stick of memory out and testing it in all the memory slots if it still doesn't post then it's pretty safe to say the MoBo or the CPU is dead.

I just fixed my brothers' computer which was dead for 2 weeks, and it was just like yours. Try removing all RAM and booting it, if it beeps I know the board and CPU is ok --i think. Then try as philhalo66 said in booting with just 1 stick of module mounted.

I just used a non abrasive eraser on the RAMs contact points in my case, then I repeatedly unplug and plug the DIMMs on the sockets, powered on, and it booted.
